The Mrs. and I just returned from a few days at Starvation. Caught a bunch of walleye but alot of them were very small 9 to 12 inches I would say. We did find some nicer ones for a couple meals there and picked up a few jumbo perch along with some nice small mouth. Slime rockets were all over the upper end of the lake. For a busy weekend the power squadron wasn’t too bad, I was surprised. We got into some eyes just before dark last evening on the upper part of the lake and watched a big old storm heading our way just as the bite started. We left at dark and I do mean dark with some lightning bolts flashing to the North of us. I had been told that it can get pretty nasty when you come across the mouth of Rabbit and the wind is from the West. My Friend wasn’t kidding, when we hit the mouth of Rabbit I’m not sure how high the waves were as all I could see was what my running lights were showing me and it was pretty impressive with the waves hitting us from the port side, it bounced the old Crestliner around pretty good. Loading the boat was also alot of fun in the wind. The rain didn’t hit until we were all buttoned up back in camp. I did run into FOD at the store and it was nice putting a face to a name. Yes, it was nice to meet you as well. It was funny as I crossed paths with ya a couple times thinking to myself, that guy looks really familiar… Wish we would have had more time to talk. Fishing for me was fast and furious for little dinks like you had said. I never caught an eye over the 13 inch mark, but I also was not bottom bouncing or trolling much, as to locate some bigger fish. My experience was that the boats, and jet skiers were extremely rude and were constantly doing circles around me in that drift boat. Breaking the wake less speed laws left and right. I really wanted to pick a fight or two after much of that. Other than that and the folks that ended up encroaching on our camp site, and the endless heat, I had a fun weekend. I doubt I will do the heat of the summer thing out there much anymore. I will wait till fall and spring to really be constantly out at that lake. High mountain streams here I come…LOL

Actually we didn’t bottom bounce much, we either trolled or threw cranks most of the time. A couple of our hottest baits was a flicker shad in gold and silver with a red lateral stripe, and a blue and silver shad rap with an orange belly. We run our down riggers down about 5 feet and a pair of planer boards with the line out 60 to 70 feet behind the boards. My trolling speed varied between 2.5 to 2.75 mph. The weather was pretty hot down there, the camp host said it hit 101 Sunday. [fishin]
Nice Eye, we fished Friday and Saturday most fish 14’’ to 16’’ a few 20s. Perch were small and annoying.

you seem to one of the few so far this year that found the good perch. others have had one or 2 here and there.
I might be dreaming, but i thought you said you might sneak up to Pelican during the trip. did you? maybe i missed the post. maybe i am going crazy?
we are boat less for a while, so keep on fishing for us.

I’m maybe even more impressed with your rig. How in the world do you ever find a way into the gas pumps or turn that baby into a camping spot or go backwards?? I’ve never had the courage to tandem the tow vehicles especially with a fifth wheel.
IMO, tandem towing with a fifth wheel is the only way to go. Much more stable than two bumper pulls.

I usually have to stop at a gas station that handles the big wheelers as there is enough room to turn around. There is no backing up at least not very far. I don’t tow tandem a whole lot, we have a 10 ft. Lance slide in camper that we use more when towing the boat. I pulled tandem this trip because I left the trailer at some friends down there and will be picking it up for the DAV fishing day on the 6th at Soldier Creek, our bow hunt starts shortly after that so I will leave it at a buddies until our hunts down there are over
We only caught a few big perch, the rest were dinks. We didn’t go to Pelican, the wife had fought enough bugs at Willard this summer to have to contend with them at Pelican.
The wife caught several that size, but I saw a couple taken that were 9 to 10 lbs. and released. Nice healthy fish this year.
We were there this weekend as well, and it was by far the worst I’ve seen for rude water sports enthusiasts. Constant flybys at speed with a whole open lake behind them to play in. I’ve taken a vow to never do Starvation on a holiday again. I miss the good old days were a dozen boats on a holiday were common. Unfortunately those days are gone forever, and even more so when the new upper campground improvements are finished. [frown]
