Flaming Gorge Report- 10-28-12

Hit the pond again today, partnered with my son. It was a beautiful day on the water- no wind, temps in the 50s (both air and water), and only one other boat launched which was a buddy of mine. We saw some surface activity just down the shore from the launch, so we motored 100 yards and started casting jigs. The rainbows were on fire, especially while it was cloudy. The graph almost looked like the sensitivity was too high because there was so many fish. Marks were 20-80 ft, which ended up being rainbows stacked on top of lake trout. We caught several bows and a few lakers, but the bite slowed once the clouds burned off.

We hit some other spots and still found lots of active bows and even some active lakers. There was one common denominator- we were both using a 3-inch Gulp minnow on a 3/8 oz jighead. We fished it vertically or casted and jigged back to the boat. Rainbows were high (surface-60ft) and lakers were low (60-80ft).

Hope it helps, Ryno

Nice report Ryan, are most of the bows over 3 lbs or under? Good looking fish.

Sounds like a fun trip thanks for the story. J

I didn’t take any weights, but 4 of the fish were the same caliber as seen in the pic and we had about 1/2 dozen others that were a little smaller, in the 15-17-inch size range. The remainder (15 or so) were 12-14-inches, which would be last summer’s planters. They are definitely the most aggressive. It was a lot of catching for the 3 hours we were out there, especially with the additional lake trout. Hope it helps, Ryno
