What, a weekend at the Gorge and the wind isn’t blowing 30-40mph??? It was awesome weather up here and the lake was like glass on Saturday and Sunday. Daytime temps were near 48F and the surface temps have cooled to 43-44F.
My son and I spent a few hours trolling on Saturday, looking for lakers in the Canyon. The lakers didn’t cooperate until the afternoon, but we caught a few rainbows to keep us from falling asleep in the warm sunshine. All in all, we ended up with 9 bows and 4 lake trout.
We caught fish on a Serpent spoon in tequila sunrise, a Williams spoon in rainbow trout, and a Forage Minnow in gold perch. We played with depths a lot but most of the fish came from 55-65ft, pretty deep for this time of year. Once we marked a group of fish we trolled through a few times to pick-up the hitters. Like Linedangler’s report last week, the rainbows were smaller at around 14 in, with the biggest around 16-17 in (see pic). The biggest mack we caught was 18 inches. Trolling speed was around 1.8 mph.

We decided to pull gear and head home around 3pm. My son was pulling in a small bow, when a big mack (?) hit and put up a 20 second fight. It stripped some line and let go, but the status of the rainbow told the story with missing scales, tooth abrasions, and eyes popped out like it was just squeezed. That got us excited, so we headed out again on Sunday. We trolled some bigger lures, but we only managed 2 laker pups in a couple of hours.
