Hit Mantua on sunday with the guys and had a good day see tyedyes report. So I talked with the family and yesturday had a BBQ that I had to help with. So my girlfriend and I went out and tried our luck at Mantua once again yesturday morning. Hoping to bring back a few bass to fry up.
We went to the new dock/ tube launch and started throwing out a few different spinners and immediatly knew today would be good. Two trout 18 and 19 inches slammed our size 0 rainbow panther martins. After one other trout we decided to try else where for bass. We picked up and tried along the road leading to that lot. Found multiple Largies here and there.
Got to the dike and started walking and casting and we really couldn’t stop catching all the way to the other dock. We caught fish on Wacky worms, Spinners, Spinnerbaits, Rapallas and even some homemade flies. By the time we got blown off at 12:00 we had over 35 fish combined. We got three 16+ inch Largies that were returned happily. Most the bass were about 10 inches. All fought like beasts. We ended up keeping 9 total from 9 inches to 15.5.
First time I’ve caught a bluegill on mantua (first time trying really) and they were definitally frisky but not interested in them really.
It was fun because for the first time I’ve really experimented with my tackle correctly and have found out how to use alot of it succesfully… Including a Yellow worm I was told my multipul anglers wouldn’t catch me anything… AWESOME
Got home with our take and took a good hour and a half cleaning and filleting them. Was a great day out. They tasted even better and were definitally the best part of the food. *sorry to the New York Strips and franks…
Caution if you don’t like bass at their best don’t look at my pictures!
Oh man that “just for fun pic” had us rolling over with laughter! We just about died from the stomach pains of laughing so hard!!! Gives me ideas for the next time I take pics.
Awesome that you were able to repeat the mantua luck streak. Way to slay 'em and fillet 'em! Glad to see you caught some bluegills too. CvFisher and us got a pretty good laugh when we heard you haven’t got any the past two trips. CvFisher even got one on a bare hook. As he said “I cannot even keep those damn things off my line at Mantua”. Way to get some troutski’s too. God I have been there so many times and have only lost the one you saw me loose. It has been a while since I have tasted trout, starting to go through withdrawal.
Dude you have to share the name of that yellow worm with me, I need to add that to my collection. PM’s will do just fine.
Sounds like you had fun and also had some a good dinner. Thanks for the post and pics! But be prepared for the worst. Don’t worry about me. I would have kept those smaller ones to eat too!
There are seriously some brutes in Mantua. Like my first Large ever was two days ago and I got hella excited and it was only 10 inches. Then I switched up my lure as we were packing up to leave and had that 16.5 incher slam my silver and red wacky and now I understand the drive for them haha. Felt good after I was told wackies probably wouldn’t do much there as it was weedy and shallow. Litterally first cast out and it SLAMMED.
That would be sick to get into to some fish with you Cat. Maybe we can meet up sometime and finally find me a cat. I’ve yet to intice one out while out alone this year. Wonder what I could be doing wrong… Then I realise it’s what I"M doing therefor it could be a long list [:p]
haha Thanks man. After reading the 50+ responces to Tye’s post and them only keeping a few I knew I would be slammed but I figure I let more than twice as many swim away along with the five biggest of the day so nobody has business complainging[angelic]. I could of easily kept our limit of 12 in bass all 13 inches + but I tend to like the freshness of smaller fish for some reason.
Thanks for the heads up for sure. If you ever want a fishing buddy let me know, I’d love to meet more of the guys and catch a few of ANYTHING with them.

Yeah it just proves these guys hate me. It had nothing to do with the fish we caught. Either that or they reformed, which I doubt.
We were going to go back to Mantua for Monday but the idea lasted up until the tire blow out at Willard on the way home Sunday. Nobody around me was open to fix the tire on labor day so oh well.
Eh I think they just enjoy getting under your skin and have you guys respond so easy haha. That or that you Sun tanned a Tiger Musky haha [:/][crazy][frown][;)] <i jest i jest
Congrats on the catch man…and the fact that you finally pulled out a Bluegill. About dam time if you ask me! Way to get some of those Mantua Trout. Maybe the spinner I was using was too big…maybe and more likely it was the locations that I was fishing to blame. Anyways that pic of the bass heads is a classic. It is has been a long time since this site has made me laugh out loud. Were you fishing from shore along the dike or the pontoon? That wacky rig is deadly for bass. Have you tried using an O-Ring on em yet? For Cats the best place is Utah Lake (although there is a consumption advisory[frown][frown][frown] for the Channel Cats) and Willard Bay is another good place for em too. There are some Black Bullheads at Pineview but they are few and far inbetween. Try a worm sunk to the bottom or a white Roostertail spinner with a worm at Willard for the Cats (just cast it out…let it sink to the bottom and start the retrieve). Evenings is when the cats at Willard usually come out to play. Good luck out there buddy…like you really need it. Thanks for your post bro.
P.S. I just BBQ’ed one of my LMB’s (instead of the usual beer batter technique) and all I have to say is…uh oh…those bass are in some serious trouble. Talk about TASTY!!!
There seems to be some serious anti bass elitist, huggers effort going on here lately. That’s ok with me, I love to eat those guys. They are second to Walleys for me to eat and I love eating my catch. Just don’t overdue it ok?
haha don’t worry if it weren’t for the family get together yesturday I probably would of only kept one or two. As awesome as they can taste I wouldn’t pick it over shrimp scampi or a nice juicy 20 oz prime rib. So I’m not tempted to pay the 30 bucks in gas too often ; )
Can’t argue that!!! Good on ya. I love blood rare prime or steak and would much prefer also, but, can’t afford it right now. Oh well, Chuck steak every 6 months is good.
Nice dude! Glad you made it back out there. Fishing with you there on sunday was a blast! I know we weren’t catching monsters but for 2 newbie bass fisherman we did pretty good. Looks like you did even better on monday. When we going back?
P.S. Glad you were there to witness my 3 fish in 3 casts! First time that’s happened to me. Hopfully not the last.
nice catch! good job releasing some of the bigger ones! and a year or two from now when ya hook into some fun fighting, 18,19 and 20 plus inchers, it very well could be a fish that you released. I’ve caught some bruisers that were a ton of fun and they had some sore lips from other anglers, fun resource to share. nicely done. haha I like the title! but I had to look, [pirate] . pretty sure a horror flick would be the video of you and the twins cleanin bass. it would be like saw or something. [:p]
Well done mate!!! You have really come along in the fishing skills stakes. Wasn’t that long ago you posted asking for some help cos all you had caught was a seagull, an old boot and a cold (or sumpin’ like that…hahahaha )
Credit to you for absorbing the info the BFT’ers gave and to them for providing it.
Haha thanks mate, Sadily that list is better than mine… My list was a turtle, faul hooked a carp, and my self two mnutes later on the slimy hook I caught the carp on haha
I’d really like to get out with you sometime! I’m open alot have certain expectations I’m required to meet and they are random but other than that I can fish 24/7… or till my gas runs out and I wait for a check ; )

Yes Utah lake has great catfishing but why drive all that when you have the bear and cutler. Also pineview is loaded with bullheads. Willard has a great population of cookie cutter kitties and can be caught all day long. Good baits for da kitties are cut bait, carp, and dead chub and carp minnows
