Scofield Ice Fishing 12-2

Hello Again… Myself and 2 buddies arrived to our favorite spot which is the 2nd group of cabins past the damn at Scofield at about 8:30 on Sunday December 2nd. We decided to drive our truck pulling a trailer with 2 snowmobiles down close to the ice. Kinda a bad move. After unhooking the trailer and pulling the trailer back up to the road with one of the snowmobiles we were good. Now off to the fishing part… One guy was now out on the ice and he said the ice was 5 inches. I drove my snowmobile out on the ice and and did a large circle and right back on land. No guts. Then we drug our stuff out to about 14 feet of water by hand. We fished from about 9ish to 3ish and we landed 42 fish. Great average size of about 13-14 inch fish, not 1 dink. We caught 2 cuts, 0 tigers, and the rest rainbows. One 17 inches and then one whopper 20 inch real fat bow(no i did not catch either of the big ones). The ice was not 5 inches thick. The ice was about 3 to 3 1/2 inches thick. there was about 8 inches of snow on the ice, so, it was pretty slushie. real slipery. A group of 3 fishing next to us had poles scattered all around and we watched there group of 3 people hit the deck 4 or 5 times. really pretty funny to watch. It was over all a awesome day on the hard deck for the first ice trip of the year. Sorry but i am not sure how to do this. I tried to put a photo with my name but could not do that either. I emailed a photo to one of the BFTer guys to help make my photo smaller but never heard back. We did take photos of the biggest fish and of the fishing spot though… good luck and jerk hard… Travis

Sounds great!! Thanks for the report. I plan on bringing my son next Saturday the 8th. I am sure the ice will be thicker. What bait were you using? I have had a lot of success using meal worms, wax worms and crawlers. I know the area that you fished it is usually hot right off the ramp by the cabins. I plan on fishing out by the island, I have had a lot os success out there. Anyone interested in going to Scofield on Friday the 7th?

We used crawlers and salmon eggs, but everyone that was fishing caught fish. We seemed to get more bites if you were not jigging your pole. Rat finky ice flies and some small white gittzits were the ticket for us.

Thanks,

I want to head up there this week with my kids.

I usually fish in that same area.

Is the entire lake capped?

How far out from shore were you?

Thanks for your help!!!

Nice report. I know the brain has a hard time digesting this, but a snowmobile can go safely on thinner ice than you can safely walk. It’s all about physics and how the weight is distributed.

yes the lake seemed to be totally capped and we were in about in 14 ft of water. maybe 75-100 yards…
