BIGbites and I went for some bluegill and bass action at Pelican saturday afternoon. The action was steady but not as fast as we are used to this early in the ice season. We caught our fill of 8" - 9" bluegill and a few 13" - 14" largemouth bass. We fished the east side and the ice was 7" thick where we were but a couple guys about 50 yards to the north of us drilled additional holes looking for faster action and told me the ice was only about 3" in that spot. So thickness varies but overall conditions are good. The lake is full and the ice is good and solid on the edges. There were four other groups out on the east side. It was great to be on the ice on ol’ Pel. ![]()
I was out there Friday and tried several areas, from the reed edges out in to the lake, catching fish everywhere just not terribly fast action. They seem to be scattered and on the move right now.
Thanks for the report! Just what I have been waiting to hear all month long. This is almost as good of a news as finding out what gender my new baby will be this morning. [;)]
Thanks for the info Ron, I have a room booked in Vernal for the wife and I on the 6th and 7th of Jan, for our annual Pelican trip which began back in the late 70’s. We just love that lake for ice fishing.[fishin]
Hey Pete. I agree, Pelican is a great place for ice fishing and has provided many enjoyable days of fishing on hard and soft water for me and my family. Pelican definitely has a place in my heart. That is great you make it an annual trip with your wife. We might see you out there on the 7th, but right now we have plans to chase some slimers that weekend.
You know where I access the lake so we should be parked there Friday afternoon and Sat. After that trip it will probably be Starvation several times again this winter.
