With all this rain, and warmer temps, should I be getting the boat ready? I know that my sound like a dumb question, but I quess I just don’t kow the weather around here yet. Is spring really right around the corner for us here in UT or is this pritty unusual?
If it is unusual, about what month will be be able to get the boats out for open water?
It will get cold again but as my dad says “if you don’t like Utah weather, wait 5 minutes, it will change”
in '94 i went snowboarding in march while it was snowing, the following year it was in the 70’s.
lol i think ya got about 2 month’s to go before getting to excited about the boat.. maybe less maybe more.. i have seen ice in utah in the high mountain’s up to the first of june in the colder years.. then in some years utah lake and yuba never freeze at all..
This is what you call the January thaw. It will get cold again. January and February are the coldest months.
I sure hope you guys are right about it getting cold again. I still need the snowmobile to get down to Utah Lake so I can catch a bugger walleye than Ron has… LOL

that one was caught in one of them years Ut lake did not freeze over.. i’m thinking it was close to this time of year as well.. we were catching 4 or 5 a day. but that one was by far the biggest i have caught! 28" [sly].. i’m still kicking my butt for not putting it on the wall.. i guess i could get a replca mount made up tho. [crazy].
if your looking for the big walleye ya need to look at deercreek tho! there are are some in there pushing 16 lbs i would think!
Dude take an axiety pill and relax [;)] the ice will be with us for a few months even longer on high elevation lakes. I will be the first on the water as soon as it thaws out.Utah lake or yuba will probably be the first ones.
looks like we are back to 20’s in the ten day forecast… DC is definatley a good place to find waldo… or in my case a good place to loose waldo…
Utah Lake traditionally is open around the 17th of March. One of the coolest things is to go down to the State Park or Lincoln Beach and watch the wind blow the ice off. Some years it is not so spectacular, but this year it should be pretty good as it is 8-12 inches thick. Wind will stack it up 15-20 ft or more.
**You should be able to put ur boat on the water before the end of feb. Utah Lake normally stays frozen less than 6 weeks in a average winter. It only takes a little w… to turn liquid.

Bear Lake is open water right now if you need a fix. Usually by the first of april you can get on a few lakes but there is still some that have ice until may and even into June. I am not ready for all that yet. Ice season has not been stellar this year and i need more to hold me over until next season.[;)]
C’mon Bro! Not stellar??? You’ve already whacked a massive brown (and didn’t take a swim), a tiger musky, and loads of crappies! I wish my season has been that good! 
I have launched my boat on Utah Lake in Feb. and caught some big pre-spawn eyes. The problem with Utah lake is that even after it thaws enough for a boat to cruise the lake, the harbors are frozen.Lincoln beach boat ramp is usually the last thing to open up, even when there is open water clear to the island. If you need to fish open water, go to Redmond and catch some Pike and channel cats. Quite a few folks go down there to get a casting fix in winter. Launching a boat is possible, sometimes.
I had an urge to fish open water last weekend. Drove down to Lemmington canyon for a fishing,coyote hunting,chukar and let my dog run trip. The river was froze solid where I wanted to fish.My second spot by the Lemmington garbage dump was open water, but not a bite. Didn’t stay too long. My dog kept jumping in after my lure.
I talked to a friend who was pushing ice on Wednesday on Bear Lake. Lots of ice sheets floating around. The lake is ready to freeze. A few days of calm cold nights would do it. Even in this warm spell, it’s still below freezing there.
I hope so Rich. I would love to be able to walk on water again this year up there. Scott said that there are sheets floating around up to 1/2" thick.
