March 17th is pretty much the traditional ice off for Utah Lake. You get some small open spots like where the warm springs are and inflow areas. Should be some open water by the weekend.
One of the neatest things is to watch the wind blow the ice off when it starts. Something kind of cool watching 20, 30, 40 ft sheets of ice sliding over the surface and crashing into the breakwaters. Might be a good party opportunity !!!
For you early birds, wishing for open water, Utah Lake has open water from Lindon Boat Harbor, North to about the North Waste District inflow. It is about 50 to 100 yds wide and will keep on growing, especially when the winds start. LET THE GAMES BEGIN !!!
I can only remember one year that I didnt have my boat out on Utah Lake by March 5th. That year I launched by the 15th. Of course I had to break some ice to get out of Lincoln beach boat ramp. Thats the worst part, when the lake has open water, but the ramps are still frozen. I’m going to pray for launching on the first or second this year. Just because I will be off work those two days.Chuck, you game for a Walleye trip on the second day of March?
Looking for a current report on Lindon or Lincon Beach Springs for Saturday. Is that open water mentioned earlier still there? Less/ more? Any info in how big the cricle around the springs is now?
Rode down there yesterday don’t waste your time not enough open water to fish maybe 15 feet out next to the ramp we need a good storm with some good wind [;)]
I’ve never fished UL in open water until well into summer.
If any of you would mind sharing anything about tactics and what species you are fishing for (and what their likely habits are) at this time - I’d really appreciate that!
I’ve ice fished until the end of April in recent years, but the way it’s going the boat may come out early. [;)]
Oh yea, I’m game for some of that. I sent you a pm. I’m trying to make up a new batch of tails with a differant brand, we’ll see how they turn out. later chuck
Yup, and as soon as we can launch, we can catch Walleye. Me and Chuck did pretty good one year when we launched out of the “L” on the 24th or 26th of Feb. The other ramp was still frozen and we had planned on fishing out of my little ten foot boat. Then when we looked at the “L”, we went back to my house and got the big boat.
