Wanted to just get out for a few hours. Decided Newton over Willard. Water level is high and temps ranged from 53-56 degrees. Only 4 other boats out and few bank tanglers. Managed to catch a 8" crappie about 43ft down. Lake has not turned over quite yet. Graphed only minimal fish on the finder so maybe they are transitioning into the shallows. Wind blew like always. Pulled out with 3 ski boats ready to launch. Still too early here in Cache Valley for the panfish. Give it another 3 weeks and it should be getting better. Trolled for Tiger Musky but no takers.
i was there today i seen schools in 40 feet of water with larger fish around them. It was a chilly evening so I got off the lake around 7pm fish was slow and boring and cold typical of this time of year,
I take it the water is pretty high now??
I could never understand why that isn’t a wakeless speed lake. [crazy]
It needs to be. Maybe they’ll start charging to launch someday. It seems like a free launch is why everybody goes there to wakeboard. I just think it’s funny that these people have $50,000 boats, but they go there to save $10. I guess they blew all their money on the boat. All those little Preston area lakes need to be wakeless too.
+1
Its quite simple. The lake is owned and managed by the local farmers with the cooperation of the DNR that they will keep atleast 1/3 full pool each year intead of what happened in 02 and 03. I agree with the wakeless rule. What good is coming out of allowing boaters on Newton? I myself have had several, no dozens of close encounters at Newton that ended with my arms in the air yelling obsenities! Too narrow af a lake to allow waterskiing. From now on I just take pics of the boaters as they pass. It seems to get there attention alot better when I’m pointing a camera rather than my middled finger. They get real nervous when i tell them its so that i can give the DNR thier registration number so that they can be cited.
I agree with you that all the small lakes should be wakeless or at least horse power restricted such as 10 or 15 HP. max.
I’m going to have to start taking their pics when they get too close. I heard that if you call the sheriff he will cite them. It’s frustrating because all I can afford right now is a float tube, and so that’s what I use. I’m seriously scared that some moron is going to run me over. It’s sad that I live five minutes from the lake, but I pass it by most of the time to go someplace safer.
Yeah my buddy and his wife got their canoe swamped last summer. lost his poles and tackle. I’ve had a few close calls myself. I’ve thought about trying to cast out and snag the skier when they buzz me. ya know give em a little motivation to share the lake.
I’ve been wanting a canoe, but if I get one I don’t think I’d take it there for that very reason. He should have pressed charges or sued the morons in small claims court for his lost gear. I remember a few years back somebody did snag the skier after being buzzed repeatedly at Deer Creek. The skiers called the cops who then gave them a ticket for being to close to the float tube. I love that story, it never gets old.
The water ski crew likes Newton because it is long and narrow. The waves dissipate faster so there is less chop to ski over. Compare it to Hyrum some busy breezy July weekend. Because it gets narrow it can also get crowded fast, Heaven help the float tuber, canoe, kayak and row boat as they always seems to loose. Once a ski boat gets a skier up it’s like an unwritten law that you can’t throttle back and dump them back in the lake even to avoid a poor situation with another craft. I would love to see it go wakeless.
It will never go wakeless it will become a private pond before that but we can wish.’
I can not blame anyone for not feeling safe on that body of water.
I have seen countless near tragedy’s there.
Ive seen both fisherman and rec boaters do some pretty awful stuff. I have also been one of them idiots and not proud of it… I let some guys get the best of me and I turned into a raging 300 pound gorilla screaming around the lake in my 20 foot bass boat yes I was given a wide berth after that but It was not worth it at ALL.
I would guess its 2 and a half to 3 feet from high water mark
there were some fish as shallow as 15 thou. most were holding right on the deep side of the shelfs.
I would love to see it go ‘wakeless’ as well as Mantua.
Maybe one day.
just put a chunk of lead with a large treb hook on and if they cross that 150ft mark… send it and set the hook king chugg!!!
if the buttheads jus saw the teeth and aggressive nature of a tmusk i really think they would think twice before jumping in. Someone needs to stage a bite story you know a little blood some tears get em frightened
I called the DWR last year about all the hot shots on their jet skies and ski boats, they told me to call parks and rec. I called parks and rec and they basically told me tough $#1+. The reality is that when the water gets low you really cant be in that water legally. If I remember right the legal distance between boaters is 150 feet. The biggest reason that people go there to boat is because they are too cheap to buy a state parks pass to ski anywhere else. Start charging them and see if the number of skiers goes down. Someday someones going to really get hurt on that water, god forbid.
Supposedly a wakeboarder or water skier was bitten a few years back. She had a toe ring on and the flash apparently attracted the fish. Someone did tell me once that they used to wakeboard there until they found out about the musky. It just might help to spread the word about the vicious tigers of Newton.
last spring i caught a 36 inch muskie at newton, and as i pulled it from the water, a boat with about 6 people in the boat and one person on a wake-board, came flying by. they stopped right in there tracks and starred at the fish i had just caught. it even scarred the person on the wake-board enough to make him swim back into the boat. they talked to me about the fish and couldn’t believe the teeth it had. i laughed and released it. as i released it they all looked at me like i was crazy. i just laughed and told them there are bigger ones in there. they didn’t like that much. not 15 minutes later they loaded their boat up. i dont know if that scarred them or what, but i couldn’t help but think it spooked them good.
