I have had some pretty good days at Newton over the last week and a half. I haven’t gotten into any tigers yet, but have seen a few surfacing here and there. But I have managed to get into a lot of bass and perch, as well as the occasional crappie and bluegill. Fishing has been fun. But of course, there are the idiot boaters out there who think that it doesn’t make a difference if they go zooming by at 3/4 to full throttle 50 to 75 feet away from a small Coleman Crawdad. I bet I have picked up 5-10 gallons of water over the course of my last 3 trips out there from these idiots. Really upsets me. I yelled at the two idiots pictured below (no zoom at all). One told me to get out of the middle of the lake (I was fishing the shore and casting my lure about 5 feet from the shore), and the other asked, “What do you want me to do?” Really, I couldn’t care less if they were 10 feet away, but it would obviously be nice if they would obey the wakeless speed within 150 feet. I can’t wait until they rip up the ramp here in a few weeks and these morons cannot launch their boat while the ramp is being fixed.
Anyways, I just wish there was more I could do to report these morons than just email the DWR.
And I thought the Powersquad had given the Newt a rest. Guess some don’t realize when it’s not safe to launch anymore…
They should really at least add a “wakeless season” to that lake. I’ll bet the fish would spawn better w/o all the disruption!
So what did you hear about the ramp? I figured that flagging was the “fix” - talk about a bandaid patch! haha.
Kinda hope they don’t make it too long!
Wonder - are they gonna add a dock? Might be handy. They did put in the bathroom.
I can smell a fee coming!
Now you gotta find one of the big bag cats I’ve heard once roamed that lake!
Zoom in on their numbers, and report that.
Alternative - rig one of these to “pitch”. I don’t think most of them boaters realize (or care) that the shore counts as proximity - ALL shore! As well as other boats.
Have the same problem. Everywhere I go the big shiny wake board boats just have to fly by at full speed and show me how cool they are. Heck at deer creek a couple weeks ago while I was in the wallsburg arm fishing I started seeing beer cans and cigarette butts floating by my boat. Naturally I picked them up out of the water as that’s how I was raised. But returning back to the dock I seen the culprits drinking and swimming with all their friends. Disgusting and disappointing example they were setting for everyone. I don’t mind cold beer and I even smoke. But never do I leave my trash behind or show disregard for any other boater or bank tangler.
Hey many years ago my grandpa in Idaho used to carry a bucket of rocks and a wrist rocket under the seat in his boat a well placed rock to ankle leg or torso they usally leave you unattended.
I stopped going there even though my boat can handle the waves. The fishing aint as good when there are lots of boats motoring by. I hit the pig up instead because the kokes are still fun to catch but you dont have to worry about the power squad.
heck its getting bad in alot of bodys of water here in cache valley, havnt fished newton for quite awhile because of the same reason. I really think the dwr needs to do somthing really bad.
I love what everyone has said here. I know I am not the only one that feels this way, and there are plenty more out there that feel as we do.
I also had a problem with this near Cache Junction down towards the dam. I was hugging the shoreline to stay away from all of the boats, and one made its way over from the other side of the river. They slowed down, and I could even make out a logo on a dude’s t-shirt. I thought to myself that they were going to be respectful. All of a sudden, right before they passed me, they floored it, and lo and behold, I took on a bunch of water. As soon as they saw what happened, they immediately went to the other side of the river and were gone. Just to confirm what you said about “a lot of bodies of water here in Cache Valley.”
Heck ive even had problems on the bear river itself. Last year we had launched at the marina and went up river to fish. We were stopped with anchor down fishing close to the bank. Well to make a long story short a salmon skier came within 8 feet from us and turned as sharp as he could soaking us with his huge wall of water. We talked to him later and he was very apologetic said he didnt see us, we understood and just left it at that. But with people like that on the water its only a matter of time till someone gets seriously hurt.
**For what it is worth, I brought up the subject of Newton and the “friendly interaction” between the power squadron and civilized folks at the DWR open house. Notes were made and it is possibly one of the items being reviewed and discussed prior to the RAC meetings which will happen in September. **
My suggestion is to go into the DWR website and find the area where they solicit input from the public and voice your concerns. If enough folks make a strong enough case for it then it is more likely to get some attention.
The one big potential obstacle is ownership of the lake and who can make the rules. DWR may not have the authority to shut down the boats.
I hope they soon charge because that will keep some of the boats off the water. Especially the young kids in their parents boat that are the worst of the power squad!
In all reality I think they should employ on and off days for anglers and skiers/wakeboards/etc. That what they do on trail system like Millcreek Canyon, bikes are allowed on trail odds days of the month. we can’t keep them off but there can be a compromise and a solution because it’s really a matter of time before something really bad happens.
In some other states on smaller bodies of water they limit the horsepower allowed on the lake. I have seen 10hp, 15hp, 25hp and 50hp. The problem is that would stop some bigger fishing boats. Areas with concessions don’t want to any limits. In areas with sensitive waterfowl hp should be limited.
I feel your pain buddy, pv is a zoo and them power squadrons can be real a**holes… I have been almost swamped a couple of times. I dont take anymore crap, for pv a 100ft away for me is cool however 75’ and closer and that boat will get some choice words and 2 big hands in the air with only 1 finger on each hand…
my safety is more important then offending someone who is breaking the law! tossing big lures behind behind them but in there direction also helps, now i didnt say throw them to hit them but rather to let them know you are there.
You won’t be kidd’n anybody if you think fees will stop them from coming. They don’t have them nice $50K-$100K boats for nothing. I’d bet it would just frustrate fishermen launching small craft more than anything. For example Mantua. The last couple of times I fished there this summer there were no more places to even park a boat trailer.
ya when i went to echo this year some stupid wave runners girls about my age or older think if they can show off and impress me by doing donuts but they can just fall in the water and hope the wave runner would run away from them XD
The statute of limitations is up, so I’ll tell this tale.
I was bank fishing at Pineview and some idiot on a jetski decided to race over and do donuts right in front of me. He fell off once and in the tenporary quiet I asked him to play elsewhere. He said “This is my hobby and I’ll do it wherever I want.”
The next time he zoomed by, I put a round from my .357 about ten feet in front of him. He stopped and yelled obscenities at me.
I said, “This is my hobby and I’ll do it wherever I want.”
