Hi all, first Id like to introduce myself. My names Mike and I currently live in West Des Moines, Iowa. My wife is getting stationed at Hill AFB and were looking to live in Layton, Roy, Clearfield, or Ogden. Ive been doing some research over the last few weeks about Utah fishing and, well theres not a lot out there that explains what I would like to know.
Ive got a boat load (w/o the boat) of bait caster/spinning reels and rods. Im an avid bass fisherman and I love to hunt for walleyes. Ive done my share of trout fishing with spinning gear in NE Iowa. My parents just moved to Bozeman, Montana and Ive been hearing all about the great fishing in this part of the country. Well a month later I find out Im going to get a piece of mountain fishing fun!
Im sure I will eventualy buy the fly fishing gear and all that but Im wondering about how the fishing is in the reservoirs? Will it be easy to grab some spinning gear and head out for some bass or stripers? What are the main fisheries I should be researching? If you live in that area where do you go out for a day of fishing pretty much.
Now* *I can find the fish once I know where to go and whats there. How IS the fishing in northern utah? I know I can go out here certain times of the year (pre-post spawn, striper run, etc) but there are days where I CAN and do get skunked. Ive got the impression the fishing is just awesome in Utah, anyone second that? lol thanks in advanced for any info. - mike
I just moved to the same area, I was an hour south in provo. I moved here from california a few years ago and can say the fishing is awesome here. Their is plenty of waters to be fished, and you will have a blast. I will let the others tell you more about it as they will have more info on the lakes up north. I mostly fished strawberry which is a great trout lake, utah lake, and deer creek. Thier is also hundreds of lakes in the Uinta mountains. Fly fishing is awesome here too and you will be really close to the weber river and a few others. If you havent started fly fishing you should, I am just learning but it is the funniest and most challenging fishing i have done. Just watch the forum as lots of good info is posted on here daily and welcome.
Hey Mike, My name is Roman and I live in Roy. I spent 8 years active duty on Hill so, I’ve been there and done that. I think I still have a black t-shirt somewhere.
The closest (20 minutes) fishery for walleye is called Willard Bay. There are also large and small mouth bass, perch, and there’s a cross bred fish in there called a Wiper (half stripped bass, half White bass) They get big and fight like demons, so I’m told. I don’t really fish there much, I can’t deal with all the flying bugs that live in that reservoir.
My favorite place to cast a line[fishin] is Pineview reservoir (30 minutes). It’s full of small mouth bass, yellow perch, bluegill, crappie, the occasional trout, the very occasional salmon and another cross breed; the tiger musky (half musky, half northern pike). The musky get to 40 something inches and also fight like crazy.
Those are just the 2 closest. There are many other great fisheries a little further away.
I’d be happy to take you out and show you the spots when you get to town. You’d have to be willing to fish out of an old 18’ Ranger bass boat though. I’ve given up the bank tangling. Send me a PM for contact information if you’re interested.
