Hey, my wife has another volleyball tournament in Moab at the end of the month, and I was wondering what kind of fishing I can find in the Green River and Colorado River down around there. Any suggestions? Are there other places close? I’ve never fished down there.
Yeah, pack yourself and stuff into a raft and float all the way down to Lake Powell. There is a ton of fish in there I hear!!![sly]

I lived in Moab for several years and had some good luck on the Colorado for catfish. If you don’t mind catching planter trout you could try Kens lake. It’s south of town about seven miles, it also has large mouths and a very few large catfish. If you are going to fish the river for cats you will need to find a deep, slow hole right now and fish may be few and far between. There is a good hole at big bend camp ground, it is up river a few miles, and has a nice sandy beach. Hope this helps.
Oh yeah, take some brass spinners and fish like you are trying to catch trout, you may hook a pike minnow, or even a northern, I have also caught large mouths in the Colorado around Moab.
If you want to ditch the wife for an extended period, Recapture Reservoir is further south (near Blanding) and according to some DWR reports, it has the highest population of northern pike in any Utah water. I’ve caught nice trout from it in the past, but it’s been five years or so since I fished it last.
If you like small stream fishing, the one that feeds Ken’s Lake has always produced colorful trout that swim up from the lake.
Thanks guys! Recapture sounds fun. I’ll be there a couple days, maybe I’ll try a variety of things. I saw some people on TV catching huge Pikeminnows. Aren’t they also called Squawfish? Apparently they can get several feet long and are pretty aggressive.
Yes, the Colorado Pikeminnow was formerly called the Sqauwfish, but was changed to be PC. Please remember the Pikeminnow is an endangered species and therefore should be returned to the water immediately if caught.
When we go down to Moab we leave the poles at home and hit the trails in the Jeeps. Maybe I’ll have to try Ken’s lake next time down.
Last October my boys and I hit Ken’s Lake. Those planter trout have grown up some. 14-18" and up to 2 lbs. Also some largemouth in the 10-12" range. Lots of fun. Rapalas and safety pin spinners.
