I am headed to Moab this weekend for some mt biking. I keep hearing a Moab tourism ad on the radio about biking, jeeping, hiking and fishing… I have been to Moab quite a bit and am wondering what fishing they are referring to? Should I be packing my rod? I camp along the Colorado River sometimes and have never thought of heaving a lure into it? Is this the main fishery around there? Any other spots?
The Green and Colorado Rivers in the area hold some bass, catfish, norther pike, and sunfish/bluegill. I would certainly take my pole and tackle. With a mountain bike, you can turn your trip into an exptremely productive fishing trip. You can cover alot of river miles with the bike. You sure are lucky and fortunate to have this trip. I wish I could have one like it, this time of year, down in the Canyon Country.
So could the fishing be productive right there where the Colorado river goes through town? If my memory serves me correctly the water resembles very chocolaty milk.
There is also several lakes in the area (Kens lake may be accessable now) As well as monticello lakes a little further south. A little later on there are several lakes with good trout fishing up on the lasalls as well as some great small stream fishing for cut throats. Ask the locals for some dirrection.
Recapture Reservoir has some great largemouth bass and northern pike. It is just north of Blanding. The bass are real porkers and great numbers. As far as the pike go I have seen one that was 36 inches as well as many 30 inch plus fish. Their primary food source are black bullheads so anything resembling a bullhead either soft or hard produces fish.
Well, I am back from my Moab trip. We hit Ken’s lake 2 times since it is so close to town. The trout fishing was productive using spinners. We caught at least a dozen fish between 15-20 inches. All Rainbows. Some locals told us that the only thing worth trying for in the local section of the Colorado were cat fish. The water was extremely brown. It was great relaxing at the lake after a 2 hard days of mt. biking.
