I keep hearing that there are some sweet spots along this road. Does anyone know when it usually opens up. My Dad is coming to town and I want to show him some scenic spots, but he can’t do a lot of hiking.
Usually i could make it to trial lake right now and would fish the receding ice.But this late cold amnd snowy weather i would be surprized if you could get up that far.there are lots of small lakes by the road above trial
lake so plenty of scenery but not much fishing right now.i would wait a couple weeks the area would be much easier access.Theres usually a barrier accross the road
if you pass this you wont get much further and youll run into snowmobile central.happy fishing
Trial Lake Still has 70 + inches of snow as of this morning. They have not even attempted to open the road. It will be another month or more before anybody can get in there unlesss you have sleds.
I have fished in the Trail Lake area for 40 years. This year I would be surprised if you get in there, to where you can actually fish, by the first of June. They often open the road over Bald Mountain Pass by Memorial Day, but the lakes are still frozen and the wall of snow off the side of the highway is 6ft high or more. And, I have seen many times when you can get down one of the dirt side roads just to find the road blocked with snow drifts. And, then after you hike in anyway you find your lake frozen. I think we have a while yet before Trial is fishable.
Matador is right. They usually try to have the road cut open by Memorial Day but often even Trial Lake is not ice free by then. It usually opens shortly after that. Mirror Lake and Pass Lake usually open by the middle to end of June depending on the snow that year.
