I deleted your other post to keep you from embarassing yourself. The large fish Marathonman was talking about were CATFISH…in Utah Lake. You need to read more carefully before shooting from the hip.
That data comes from a lake just off of I-70 witch does have a longer and better growth rate…
I could not find any from the DWR on bigger bass and growth on any waters…

Since I know those tooners were molesting cats and not bass, I thought your statement was off the mark. But, it was not clearly spelled out, and ANYTHING THAT IS NOT CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD IS MISUNDERSTOOD.
Don’t we all wish we could find a bunch of bass that size? Ones without whiskers?
I wish I could find a lake in Utah or even a close state that had some that size…

Sorry Tubedude & Cliff. I tried to take a shortcut and not spell out which lake I was talking about, too big of a hurry. Anyway, this weekend is Newton reservoir. You other guys, thanks for the Mantua tip for fishing bigger bass in deep water. Its just tiring to fight the wind and the skiboats going in the middle of the lake in a tube. I’ll post my 1st musky pics this weekend on the Newton thread (if I catch one).

I’m in agreement with you and bassduder, there are plenty of bass in Mantua and plenty of size too. Most standard bass techniques catch the smaller and uneducated bass…it takes finesse nontraditional tactics to outwit anything with size since they have seen and learned to reject almost everything. I sight fish alot and in most waters 90% of the bass will only stare at baits and reject them. The bigger the bass, the less likely the inhale will come if ever. Just because people aren’t catching them doesn’t mean the population is low. It just means they are smart and don’t want a hook in the mouth. Even pro-tournament folks can’t finesse some of these bass to bite. But it doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Mantua’s bass population is very stable and size is steadily increasing for me this year. It jumped up an average of 3-4 " from last year. Plenty of 15- 17 inchers around now with a some honkers out there.
Since I have lived here in Utah I have fished Mantua mainly because it is a good largemouth lake. The size is alright if you figure the conditions here in Utah. Just about every time I go I catch at least five with the biggest so far around four pounds. Most are around the pound to two pound range. But the problem I’ve seen there is when coming off the lake I have seen at least three bass that would go five to six pounds being loaded in a cooler to be someone dinner. With so many fish that at the 10-12 inch range when someone catches a bigger one and keeps it then there goes the chance for anyone else to catch to big fish out of there. C&R only!
A 17" bass is just pushing 3 lb if they are on good feed, and will eat a 5" to 6" blue gill…In days past you would get 20" bass quiet often and in some of the bass tournaments two or three of that size would show up now days a 18" to 19" is big news…
