Cliff, you seem to have all the right answers. Why not put this to use and present them to the dwr or at the NR meetings? Most of us are just humble fishermen, preaching to us will not help the final outcome of the fishery.
Amen to your philosphy. Not to far in the past I would have debated against you on some of your points on the basis of my experience and personal selfishness, not my knowledge. I know one thing for sure, a person that fishes as much as you do has a connection with many waters and their natural cycles and have without a doubt seen the affects from many things that influence them. I trust and have changed my view of the sport of fishing and my personal conduct from what you have to say as your many observations are the proof to the theories.

Now for my observation, the real problem with most of the waters like Mantua is that there are so many people using it because of it’s close proximity to very populated places that the mere pressure, even without all the trash that gets introduced into it, prevents anything from gaining a natural balance to it.
Being an avid stream fisherman for most of my life I have watched the severe decline of habitat that has occurred on what used to be very naturally balanced waters. What is interesting about that is that I don’t see more fishermen than I used to, I just see more pigs who take, take, take, and trash, trash, trash.
What good do the regulations do when there is not enough enforcement going on anyway??? It has been a long time since I even had my license checked let alone a peek in to the cooler. Should we be so offended if we are checked or should we encourage it and welcome it?
Enforcement will always be a poor substitute for sportsmanship as you have adeptly pointed out.
Here is my committment, where I once looked away, I will now actively take exception for the sake and future of our sport. Oh if I was only as bold and knowledgable as you to put the peer pressure that is so badly needed and so effectively done by you.

Can’t help you on walleye, all we got out of Mantua is gills and perch all the others come from other places..
I have tried in the past like TD and if its not a trout it a trash fish to the DWR and they only care for trout and put and take fishery most of all…
But the more people who fish for other types of fish and under stand what it takes to make and keep a good fishery the better we will have…
The best that a humble fisherman can do is try to make things better for all, and how do we do this???By making it better for the fish…
If we as fisherman all get together for the better fishing of all types of fish we can do something but me alone to go to the DWR for something other then trout, no way…
Now if we stand together as a group we stand a chance, This is not just a trout state and the only reason that trout are doing as good as they do is cause they are planted more then other types of fish…

Not all I say about one lake will work on another but what you said about some waters being so close to the population is right on, and we do need more fish cops and all of us need to help them as much as we can…
With the new DWR position of Warm Water Biologist being added this past year, we can already see some improvement for warm water fishing in Utah.
Drew Cushing, who holds this position, has been instrumental in the building of the new warm water hatchery that is currently under construction.
Drew has some great ideas for Utah and we need to show our support by letting the DWR know our feelings and recomendations.
Yes, we can attend RAC meetings but we can also send emails to the DWR with our thoughts and ideas.
Believe it or not, they do listen to us.
We just have to be united in our ideas.
Yeah uhhhhhh Mantua doesn’t have the quality it used to…
I hope everyone believes that. The reality is sure alot of bass are getting taking home for table fair, but from what I see (and I regular Mantua, and I mean regular) most of the bass being caught and kept are for the most part under 12-13 inches. Me personally, and I am no better of a fisherman than anyone else, but I have caught more consistant numbers of 2-5lbs this year then the last few.
Luck… Maybe. But none the less I think this little reservoirs fish are so pressured that if you really wanna see quality results don’t fish like everyone else. and at Mantua most do. I maybe alone on this post, but trust me there is a select few of fisherman out there that know the true quality of Bass in there, but keep the catch and technique secrets to themselves. [;)]

All I know is that Mantua is a freat bass fishery for any one to get started at. There are plenty of fish. I just wish that there were so really big one get put back when caught. I have fished that lake since I got here in 05 and it’s not to bad for the size of the lake. I average around 1 to 2.5 pounds a fish there just wish the big ones were there more. With all the food they have it should be a big fish place but I have seen to many times when someone catches any fish from there they keep them. Please use your judgement and practice C&R on all fish over 3 pounds.
You know what as someone who grew up hookin troutskis I have found a new love with the warm water fisheries from the perch to the wipers I think they are a way more exiting gamefish all exept for the fly babies that I m supposed to be into here in in a couple weeks I hope to see all the fisheries improve in the future JUST NO SABAMA IN OFFICE K

I am only telling you what I see and hear on a weekly basis from people like me that are there fairly regularly. So don’t pitch some garbage trying to make me sound like I am being a know it all. I made no claim saying I know more than the DWR. I simply gave my opinion, which from what I have seen in the past… You can’t stand (which agian is an opinion… or is it a fact.).

I bought a u-tube cuz seeing tubedude & tubebabe with their setup, well, it looked a lot better than my doughnut tube. I bought it in Brigham city so I hit Mantua for 1 1/2 hours. Couldn’t get the bass so I hung around the buoy’s and had fun with the perch - all small. Didn’t have time to hit UL like I planned. We met Angler Dan & Fish Finatic. Should’ve brought my tube instead of the boat. Thanks for the tips guys. At least we were able to see the masters at work. 8 fish between them, all 5 - 9 lbs. See you guys up there at UL for the cats when I can break away. Heres a pic of Angler Dan reeling in the 5 lber.
Mantua is doing just fine you just have to know how to fish it. If you don’t know how to fish it you’ll catch little bass all day long but the deeper you go hint hint the bigger the fish will be. I fished a tournament at Mantau in July and we caught plenty of big fish and if I could of gotten the two big fish that I lost in the boat I would of won it instead of finishing second.

when it was flys and lures only anyone that new any thing about bass could catch one in the three pound class and some days even better…

For the first year or two after they changed from fly and lures you heard of many bass in the 5 and 6 lb class and just looking you would see lots of 10" to 14" bass swimming around and the DWR was taking 5 lb an 6 lb bass each time they needed bass for other ponds or lakes…

now only a (FEW) are catching any at all and the DWR are not getting any of that size and are not getting the numbers of bass they use too…

On a good bass lake more then a few will be catching big bass and lots of 12 to 16" bass, I would like to see Mantua back to being a good lake for large mouth bass again we don’t have that many large mouth lakes around in Utah now…
A good bass lake would put out 15 to 20 bass over 12" per day to a good bass fisherman…How many do you catch per day???
What I sent or posted about your post was taken of I guess..
But a 9lb bass would be 10 to 12 years old and a 5 lb would be 5 to 7 years old, and a 9 lb bass would be about 24" to 26" long…
You take a few pounds off those bass and I will blow out the light in the lantern I hooked and brought up from the bottom of that 100 foot hole in Mantua…[crazy]
A five pound largemouth would be five to seven years old??
I don’t think they grow that fast in this part of the state!!
Maybe Drew could tell us the age of a five pound Mantua Bass!
Years ago the three pound bass in pineview were 6 to 7 years old.
