I left St. George at 6 am Thursday morning and stopped in Junction for minnows. I ended up at Fish Lake around 9 am. I road the four wheeler over to the SE side and drilled a hole in 85 ft. of water. I put the fish finder down and discovered there was fish all over. I dropped down a 3" white tube with minnow on it and couldn’t even get it to the bottom. It was a feeding frenzy with splake all over it. I set up my ice tent and caught fish one after another. My buddies showed up around 2 pm and set up there tent close by. They started slaying them immediately. We fished until 5 pm and then checked into the room. We got back to our shelters after dark to try a little night fishing. There were lots of fish on the bottom but we couldn’t get them to bite anything. We tried many different lures but nothing would work, so we decided to leave the shelters and gear on the ice and headed back to cabin.
As we were heading across the lake on Friday morning, the wind had blown down the shelters and scattered our gear all around (won’t do that again). We set the shelters back up and found most our stuff and started fishing. The fishing was just as good as the day before but the weather wasn’t It was a blizzard out and we wanted to move locations, but ended up staying there all day. We caught a lot of fish right below the holes. I would drop down 5 ft. and the splake were all over it. I’d set the hook and they would fly out of the hole sometimes. It was pretty fun. Most the fish were caught from the surface down to 50 ft. I couldn’t see my jig my of the the time, as there ws so many fish on the finder. We were in 85 ft. of water with some fish on the bottom but they wouldn’t bite very often. At this point we decided to pack up our gear and called it a day at 5.
Saturday morning was much better weather. We started off looking for macs in deeper water on the south end of the lake but couldn’t find very many. We went back to our same spot and caught a bunch more splake. We got sick of that so I went north on the east side looking for fish out deep. Couldn’t find any, so I headed toward Bowery. This is where I got scared. I was out in the middle where the ice was clear and I could see it cracking. It was at least 6 inches thick, but was still tripping me out. I headed back South fished a for a few more hours and went home.
The overall trip was a lot of fun. We caught at least 200 Splake, 10 - 15 Rainbows, and 4 little Macks. I also found a green eskimo tent bag in case someone lost one.
