First ones out on the ice at East Canyon this morning. Wondered what was going on didn’t look like anyone had been out there since the snow fall. Dragging the sled was horrible just enough snow to pile up in front of it and not enough to keep good footing while dragging. we went from the ramp west toward the finger that usually gets good pressure. The plan was to get to the cliffs by the dam, but I tired out and set up camp right in front of the point by the finger flasher showed 50’ fish were coming in at all depths mostly about 40’ started strong with a fat 14 in bow on a glow jig with wax worms, so i rushed to set up my second pole i put a yellow jig with a berkley gulp minnow (first time trying them) and as soon as i dropped it in had fish chasing it down. I used the gulp minnow the majority of the time the wax worms just hung out for a while with not much attention the boy had great luck with a glow jig and wax worms suspended below a ball of power bait the wife was using the minnows with insufficient results, and the girl was to busy making snow angels to drop a line in the water. pretty consistent bite up until about 11:00 - 11:30 and slowed way down packed up at 3:30 great day most of it was perfect hoodie weather ice was 8-9 in light wind picked up about 2 everyone caught at least one fish (so the kids and wife dont smell like skunk anymore from last weekend) all of them were extremely fat and healthy most of them in the 15-16 inch range kept a couple for the fryer and the rest are swimming. all together we caught 17
Awesome! We’ll have to try East Canyon next weekend! Been wondering how the Ice and the fishing has been, as EC one of our favorite summer fishing spots. Thanks for the info!
Freaking fatties! Nice work and great trip report on EC.
I hit EC as well, just couple days earlier (1/6/2012). The bite was consistent from 0 dark 30 till around 10:30 then it slowed a bit. Still wonderful to get out of the soup we Utahons call air. I did the solo thing this trip, but I still managed to ice around 20 fish ranging from 13”-17” and missed that many as well.
Maniac Gizzy Bugs (Green) seemed to be the preferred, tipped with a wax worm. But other offerings was takin as well. Fished in 43’ of water, with most fish coming in at the 10’-14’ mark.
Second fish from the bottom looks like he wants some Dew! They should use that for a commercial. Might have to try some gizzy’s I’m a big fan of the cuttr’s and Maniac puts out some great lures.
