Busy Morn at Hyrum

Started off at 7 with jdawg from the beach, and went up by the cliffs - but pretty close to shore at first. Got into lots of bitty bows off the bat. So we drilled a few more holes and were entertained by the younglings - fast enough that each of us got one pole down, but couldn’t manage to get the second one set before another bite.

Skunked again was out with some scouts, but they switched ends of the lake, and I thought we’d swing over that way, but word - we were just so occupied all day -
Hope you guys did ok out there!

As light came up - we moved a bit deeper, then a bit deeper still - and each spot had the bite on as we arrived. Schools move in and out. Lots of doubles. For a time we ended up with rods set in holes farther apart. Who says you don’t get a workout fishing! That was a lot of wind-sprints! (plus hauling sleds and hills!)
But alas - still no perch. Had a visit from the DNR - very nice gents. THEY hadn’t heard of any perch even still.
Sun was nice - warm day, not much wind, good company, never even set up the tent. We probably landed about 50 fish each over the course of the morning - headed out about 1.

Guess I’ll hafta go scratch that panfish itch somewheres else!

Nice report. Sorry you didn’t find the perch or the big boys. Those planters sure get boring after a while IMO.

You taking Lunker out to Newton manana?

Hey Yote sounds like we should have stuck with our original plans going to the top end of the dam. We only ended up with a hand full of fish between 11 or 12 boys and 5 leaders. I didn’t even get a line in the water between answering requests it was a little crazy that’s for sure. Pretty slow for our group today. Probably good I don’t think I could have taken too many fish off between getting food and hot chocolates and pulling kids out of ice holes they stepped into and getting them to let the lines out again after they reeled in for the tenth time in the last five minutes. Oh and then there was the rat nests in their reels and the one that kept wanting to move to a new hole and then there was the polite patient one that finally got him a fish it was great I loved it. But I have had easier trips. Glad you had a great day. Maybe I’ll be back to normal one of these days and can come shoot the breeze with you on the ice. Later J

What say me u and yote friday and you both can school me! Is the ice thick enough to get dad out?

Nothing of much size, but a bunch that fought bigger than they were. Glad you got your guys on some fish at least. I actually had some jigs tied and ready to pass around.
Never did drop the camera down. Never did take any pictures either - ah - ya’ll know what planter bows look like. Some nice color variations. We didn’t go very far - not all the way up to the inlet for sure, but plenty of fish playing.

So no perch at your end either, eh? [:/]

Lava - I might call 'em tedious after a while, but getting all that many tugs - it’s entertaining. I’d say my best day on Hyrum so far. Still hoping to tempt a big one with a big offer sometime!
Maybe I’ll hookup a nice Musky tomorrow - that’ll help my standings! Hey - if I catch a Crappie - I’ll take a picture of it for ya. [;)]

We were out there today as well, but mainly to get a first fish for the neigbors daughter and it worked. We got there around 1 ish and fished just out from the ramp to the west a tad in 54’ of water. (didn’t want to make her walk too far) We caught perch on the bottom and trout suspended. All the fish were small.

I think you can pretty much kiss the perch good bye. We kept a couple of the larger planters and they had small perch in them and with the number of bows they are cramming in the water perch will be few and far between.

Hey big G plenty of ice we’ll have to take your Dad Friday I think he’ll have fun if we go back to my spot. There was at least 12 inches of ice today. Don’t know if Yote has Fridays off but with a few of the posts scoring Perch today he might get interested. Anyway see ya next week. Might have ice for cisco keep your fingers crossed. If so your Dad and kids should have a blast. You might want to bring little L. Later J

Hey Yote sounds like you had lots of fun. We didn’t catch perch but think we were seeing some on the graph from time to time. I also tried the tressel this afternoon but no tugs even though the water was clear and looked good just no fish I guess. Later J

Hey - if I catch a Crappie - I’ll take a picture of it for ya. [;)]

I’d rather see a pic of a nice TM

To answer your question Lava…yes lunker will probably be out there for the first time ever on the ice!!! I should make for some good Tiger BAIT!

Thanks Yote, it was a blast! Those little planters just would not stop biting! It took me an hour before I could even get my second pole in the water. I Drilled my first hole, put it down in and started to get my second pole ready (line broke in the back of my truck apparently), I pulled the weight off line 2, ran to line 1 to catch one. Pulled my kastmaster out of the packing, back to line 1, tried to remove the treble from the KM, back to line 1, got the treble off, back to line 1, tied the KM on, back to line 1, tied my jig on, back to line 1. Heck, I caught 3 on my 1st line while I was trying to drill my hole! In hindsight Yote, I am thinking we were probably well past the 50 mark. I bet we caught more than a dozen a piece in the first hour! It was great fun, great company.

Look at you Avatar! You KNOW what those look like! You tell me you’ve never caught a crappie - I say we remedy that this ice season!!!

Note - he said “probably”. I’m gonna text him in a few and tell him to get his big backside moving! Hmmm - don’t know that my auger is big enough to get YOU down through the hole - though they’ve got that 1 inch restriction…

Jeff - I’m with you, they the naysayers doubt Thomas and all. I can’t believe ALL the perch are gone. They plant that lake everyyear, and usually stock it up good in the fall - didn’t stop me from finding buckets of perch last year - and those were bigger starters. I think I just haven’t found them. Lots more lake I HAVEN’T covered than have.
See what today’s hole-patterns bring.

Hafta see about Friday. What time you thinnin?
Josh - again, thanks for coming. Nice to have the company - as much as I try to pretie everything - always seem to end up in the cold, with a small hook, small not - and can’t hardly see the darned thing! A can’t ever count anything over a dozen, but I think we each caught at least 10 per hour - easy. Plenty of misses too.
But I didn’t lose a single lure all day, got the point I gave up donating waxies to planters, and just went with a Gizzy bug - glow, on a little perch pattern jig, and a ratfinkie in green - never did change up, didn’t seem to need to!

See ya out there Lunker! You’ll love it! Just wait for the ice to start singing!!!
