Hyrum Ice Cap-Perch

Hit Hyrum for a while Sat and did pretty good on the trout. They kept me busy alright! Tougher to land on the ice - where they swim sideways, and had a number wrap up around the camera cable.
Most were planters, but did get into a burly one that stripped line, and fought like crazy. Busted off before I go him to the hole. Grr.

Sunday - hit it again, this time I was the first on the ice. Started out before 7am, and treked through the new snow toward the inlet. Found “the spot” and parked it. As I was drilling my holes and setting up the tent - an ATV tooled by, and decided to park not 20 feet from me. I thought for sure there were going to setup and start drilling holes in a gas auger. But no - they just sat there and idled. I was THIS (finger close together) ready to go have a word, and “suggest” the move on to ANOTHER spot on the WHOLE ENTIRE LAKE. I had worked REALLY hard to drag my tent and gear all the way out to be FIRST ON THE ICE. Only to have them casually buzz by and sit there (not just idling) idling and revving their engine to make SURE all the fish were properly woken up. Thanks for that.

So - popped up the tent, dropped some lines, and before I’d got the tent in position - the rod was jumpin. I really shouldn’t do that to myself. Get ready to fish - first, THEN fish. Ah well - missed him, donated bait.

Got settled in fired up the heater. It was cold - danged cold. The kind of cold that you need to wear your gloves when you handle the auger, or you’ll stick to it!

Got into lots of schooling trout yesterday, so chose a spot farther out, more to the middle - deeper territory. I wanted to get on some perch. And I did! Once I got the camera dialed up - they were there, as expected - just off the bottom. Very turbid area - lots of particulates. Had drilled the holes farther apart, in hopes of avoiding tie-ups. But with the turbidity - it was hard to find the lure. Finally did - but even so - could only see it half the time. That’s ok, the spring bobbers did the trick.

Lavaman showed up with his kids and they got into it. I still hadn’t landed my first fish - and then I got on em. Right down to the bottom - three turns up. Ice fly and waxmworm, and the game was afoot. Fresh bait was key - first hit needs a strike, and the perchathalon was under way.
Had a few heavy perch hits that turned out to be trout. Couple times my second rod (which I was too busy to keep an eye on) started dancing. One of them was a beast! Had 'er right up to the hole I think it was a tiger or a brown - was a bit uptight about getting the head pointed right, and not breaking off - so I tried to get where I could grab her, and of course- she broke off. Grrr - nice fish - probably a 20incher at least. I shoulda just muscled 'er up and gave it a tug through the hole. Hate that!

Anyway - continued to pull in perch - nothing of any great size. Maybe 9 inches the biggest. Hafta practice my fillet skills. Got a bagfull anyway. Perch Chowder for my B-day treat! Yeah baby!

After noon (ok, it was past 2) I dropped the tent and prepared to trek back. WAY less people out that Saturday (Sunday in Utah - way to beat the crowds). Kept a line down while I packed, and it kept dancing. Ended up pulling in another 10 before I moved on.

Sorry I didn’t get more pictures of the action, but that’s cuz there was so much action! Goal accomplished - I wanted to get on perch, and avoid the troutsters, and I did.

Ice was great - plenty thick and singing it’s songs. Snowmobiles and ATV’s out again, so if THEY can do it.ll

Nice bag! I am with you on the trout avoidance. Thinking about hitting it Tuesday afternoon. PM me or ignore me but if you are willing, how deep where you fishing to catch the perch? I hear of some gills being taken but if so, do you possibly know where? Anyway, glad to read your posts. LC

Thanks LC.
I won’t give out my GPS coordinate (cuz I don’t know what they were) but I was right off the bottom.

Castmaster (hookless) with a vertical ice-jig below - maybe a foot of leader. Drop the castmaster down, bounce bottom, then like 2 of three turns up. Put the waxworm-tipped lure right in the perchies face! Realized that first couple seconds is key. Watch for the quick bite! Hit a few before I’d even got the line straightened (messing around with loose coils…always something!)

They were scurrying around the muddy bottom. Lots of turbulence, I think cuz I was in the path of the inlet. Also when the trout would school through and cause commotion, they’d kick it up.
Realized if I haven’t seen a nibble after a minute - time to check bait. Typically - no bites meant no bait (left on).

Didn’t “measure” but I was in deeper water - 30-40 feet probably. No weeds on the bottom, just mud/muck.

I believe there are supposed to be Gills in Hyrum, but I’ve never hooked one up. Did find some in Willard in the fall, and some folks were surprised to hear that. ?

Somehow I’d bet they hang out where it’s weedier. Haven’t had any luck finding bass on ice.

I took the back road from my house to take my dog to the vet’ Saturday around 11 am. I noticed a bunch of folks parked at the swim beach (my house). The back road took me past the Big Toe trail head. There were tons of people parked along the road there. Probably trying to avoid the State Park fee. There’s a big herd of elk with some nice bulls hanging out in the fields near the Big Toe trail head. Did you access the lake from the swim beach or from the Big Toe trail?

Don’t know the big toe trail head. Sending you a PM.

I have a season pass, so I’ve parked in the lot by the swim area. Not sure - but presume the trial head is closer to the inlet area. It’s a fair hike across the lake, but at least it’s flat. I gather the hike up the hill is a killer, and I believe it. Can’t imagine hauling my tent and gear too far up a hill.

But at least I can say I’m getting a good workout!

Is your vet Lester?

I’ve wondered if you can drive to the inlet area. Seen duck hunters out there before. But not sure how to access it, or maybe it’s private?

NICE!! Now if I can just get into the perch my next time out. I caught a ton of trout this past Saturday, but I didn’t keep one of of them. Not a big fan.

Just a few short years ago, the perch were few and far between in that place. Seems they’re making a comeback, but still on the smallish side. Not a ton of bluegill in there either, from what I’ve gathered.

Seems the ratio of planter trout : big lunkers has grown, as now there doesn’t seem to be ‘as many’ of the big boys. But they’re still in there, even if laying low.

Largemouth Bass are in strategic areas, but they’re there, as well as the elusive Brown.

I landed a little brown Saturday, probably 9-10 inches. I think it’s interesting how their color is different in a lake than in a river.

Caught a 24 inch brown and 27 bows, and a 19 inch tiger on Sunday.

“Caught a 24 inch brown and 27 bows, and a 19 inch tiger on Sunday.”

Too bad there’s no pics- that would be cool to see a lunker like that.

Where abouts were you fishing? I assume a little deeper water.

Fished in 8 to 10 feet of water. No pics cause I like to get them back down the hole quickly, they are all still swimming.

Aha - you must have found those lunks I “released” to swim another day!
See Derek - thar be some big tigers in there, not just the newbies they planted.

Hmm shallow for bigguns. Guess they musta been coming in for a snack.

Holy crap! I thought tubedudes posts were lengthy, look out dude, you’ve got some competition!:sunglasses:

:sunglasses:Plenty of bandwidth to go around. I ain’t hoggish.

Ah yes - the short attention span theatre generation strikes again. (quip [crazy])
I know, I know - you can call it “diarrhea of the fingers”. I just like to hear the sound of my keyboard clacking.

Ramble on!

Here’s the cliffnotes version if you prefer:

It was cold, I went fishing, I caught some fish.

PS: No offense taken, none intended. It’s all good. [fishin]

That’s what I’m talkin about, strait to the point and then some pictures, I don’t have all day I’m supposed to be working. [;)]

Went back to my spot at Hyrum tonight and a guy next to me caught a 27 inch brown probably about 7-8 lbs.
