Previous moderators spent countless hours moving threads to these various boards, undoubtedly, in the hope that it would make life easier for members to find previous posts on specific topics. The logic was likely that it would be easier to find a thread, about a specific topic, on a board set up for that topic, than it would be to find it somewhere in the thousands of posts on the Utah Fishing General board. Also, one could go to one of these other boards and quickly read several threads on the same topic.
I quickly realized that moving all of these threads was a task that took an enormous amount of time (one must move them one thread at a time and after each move wait for the site to refresh before being able to move the next thread) and it also appeared few members took advantage of the information contained on these boards. For the past few years, fishing reports have not been moved, except on an occasional basis; however, many other threads have been moved.
Recently, we were encouraged to revisit our practice of moving threads, and after the four of us bounced it around for awhile, we have decided to go a different direction. Here is our new policy:
We will only move posts/threads from the “Utah Fishing General” board that are unrelated to fishing (fishing reports, boating, tackle, bait, sonar and similar would be considered fishing related).
For Sale or Want to Buy posts will be moved to the “For Sale in Utah” board immediately.
Unrelated to fishing posts/threads, will be moved from the “Utah Fishing General” board to the “Off Topic Board”. Posts/threads unrelated to fishing will typically be moved immediately but in some cases left for a short time and then moved (at the discretion of each moderator).
New threads/posts by members on the other boards, that appropriately belong on that board, will be left on that board. New threads/posts made on another board that more appropriately belong on the “Utah Fishing General” board will be left or moved to the “Utah Fishing General” board, at the discretion of each moderator.
I concur. You guys do a great job of attempting to hold the reigns on the potential chaos, and supressing rabble-rousers from getting carried away. I know the ‘moving’ has rubbed some, but I think you’ve allowed a grace period such that a post can be “seen” on the main board, before being filed and catergorized.
I agree that for long-term review, having a post on Gadgets serves better if that post persists on the gadgets thread, instead of getting “lost” on the main board.
There was a time a post of mine went a bit south of the border, and one of the mods split it off, locked the flame war, and allowed the initial discussion to continue. I thought that was a good move. The recent one that puzzled me was not a flame war, it had got off the original topic, but I was puzzled why it got split. Maybe a change to the title might have helped. Since I started off by asking what Santa had brought to anglers, I supposed it would get moved to the gadgets, but it didn’t. No bigs in my book. Puzzled, not complaining.
That one “dream fishing” report of TDs was moved to offtopic, and I can see that, BUT it was the best most wicked, super productive fishing report I’ve seen in ages!!! I’d love to pull up a catfish with the head the size of a basketball!!!
I think one thing that may puzzle some users is when a post is moved, and when another is not - even if they share a similar topic (flashers for example). BUT whoever said life is fair…
Keep up the good work. And if threads go off the deepend - I’ll be ready and waiting with the kitties!!! [:p]
The recent one that puzzled me was not a flame war, it had got off the original topic, but I was puzzled why it got split.
I split that one because the original post got hijacked and headed an entirely different direction. Over the years, I have had many members send me a PM, because they were upset that their original thread had been hijacked. Some members don’t mind and others do mind, so no matter which direction we go (let the thread get hijacked or make two threads) we will please some and upset others.
