Utah Lake @ Provo River/white bass

Took my son out for a couple hours on Saturday just off the mouth of the Provo River. Between the 2 of us we pulled in about a dozen white bass. Kept the 4 biggest.

He loved the fishing but wasn’t so excited about the cleaning.

Sounds like you guys had a great time. It is always fun to fish with your son, even if they get bored like my five year old does. Good job on the white bass. What were you using?

They were responding best to a 3-4" rapala and a safety-pin spinner with a twisty-tale grub. Seemed to attract more of the bigger ones. We didn’t catch quite as many but they had more size.

There was a group of about 6 “harvesters” standing in the river mouth about 4 feet apart from each other. As I watched for a few minutes, they caught a number of 5-8" whities which all went into a bucket.

I realize their “catch” will have virtually no impact on the overall population but it’s still quite different than what I’m used to.

Yes, they have no impact whatsoever on white bass population levels. Only two things have significant impact…drought and overpopulation of walleyes. But the lake is full and walleyes are recovering from a good solid crash die off from recent overpopulation. The white bass will literally explode ten million times the rate of rabbits for the next year or few years depending on whether precipitation levels are high this year. Soon no one will harvest utah lake, as paranoia spreads about supposed PCB levels in the fish from Utah lake. lol.
