Utah Lake 10/15/2011

Well the day was a good start. I didnt trash my boat. We trolled and casted, lucky craft, bottom bouncers with nightcrawler/gulp minnows/ and gulp worms. WE also fished nightcrawlers on jigs, shad raps, thin fins, and cotton cordell walleye deep divers. We trolled from lincoln beach to sandy beach really slow. At sandy beach there were tons of fish surfacing. I assumed they were carp and did no pay attention. Then one surfaced right in front of my face and it was a SMB!! I couldnt belive it. We were targeting walleye so we didnt stop. Big mistake we boated one white bass all day and that was it. I should have changed to top water!!! Damn I have only caught 3 fish in 3 trips. [frown] The surface temps were 64.8 at 4:00 pm and 63.2 when we left at sun down. I think Tube Dude has caught all the fish in that lake! TD you better have your medical doctor check your PCB levels

:sunglasses:Nope. Left plenty for you. Can’t help you if you don’t put hooks on your lures. Minor detail. Right?

And, about the PCB levels in my bloodstream. The doc says I am in good shape for the shape I am in. In fact, he says I am the “picture of health”.

put hooks on my lures? I knew I was doing something wrong. [;)] I think I’m going to be on trout waters till next year, utah lake has slowed down too much to keep me interested. TD if the fishing turns around at UL let me know…

:sunglasses:This has been a wierd year for most of the waters in Utah. Late summer, high water and then summer extending into fall. No wonder the fishies are acting funny…and the fishermen are going bonkers trying to figure them out.

**October and into November are typically some of the best times on Utah Lake…for almost all species. But everything has been wacko all year. All the spawns were late and the summer patterns were off too…with the higher water. **

I gotta admit it has made my jaws tight a few trips this year. I have managed to catch fish on every trip but I have had to go to plans C, D and E on more than one occasion. Heck, I’ve even caught fish on plans I have never used before.

Too many other spots coming on strong now so I too will probably let Utah Lake “chill out” and probably won’t hit it much more…if at all…until the hard deck. But if I do break down and hit the bubbleup another time or two…which is semi likely…I will definitely post a report.

I’ll be doing Deer Creek next week and maybe Willard. Would like to get back over to Starvation at least once more soon.

Uhhhhh…GOOD LUCK.

Td, I have been waiting with baited breath for your annual Huntington res report for tigers, no go this year? I’m headed up there this week hoping the fish is up to par

UL is very slow right now. I went to Lincoln Beach today from 6-8am and only caught 1 white bass. We pulled up the boat and went to the Provo state park for a couple of hours and got nothing.

:sunglasses:Haven’t been many reports on Huntington this year but what I have heard does not get me excited. The fishing has been declining…numbers and average sizes…over the past few years and there are plenty of places closer to home that have better fishing. Love the tigers but we have a lot more waters available to us with tigers in them now. Huntington used to be it.

Still…I love that little lake and might sneak in a November trip. That is usually when I do best…just about the time the edges are getting icy at night and there has been a little white stuff on the hills. Colder temps but hotter fishing.

I hit Provo boat harbor Saturday about 7:30am and fished from the docks, picked up one nice walleye 18 incher, and then found a school of white bass around ten, was non stop for about half hour then they just quit.

Here’s a late picture of the crappies we caught about two weeks age out by the weeds.

Here’s the picture, forgot to upload.

Nice little collection of Crappies there! Usually I see buckets like that full of White Bass from Utah Lake. Great to see that the crappies are making a come back out there…now if only they’ll get a little bigger. Thanks for the photo.

Holy crappies nice job

Sorry to hear that you haven’t done better… [:/] This has been a great year for me at UL. Though, I’ve had to modify how I’ve fished from last year. I went 9 times last summer and we never caught less than 100 fish each trip. (Most have been white bass. Link below of past report.) But, I haven’t been out in 3 weeks… So I talked a buddy that’s never fished UL before into going out on Fri 14th, the day before you. Yeah, we had to look for 'em, but we did find a school.

Obviously, the bigguns have been eating well this year. [;)]

We kept a bunch, but released most. We moved around and caught singles here and there, but they were schooled only in the one spot. They made for some great fish tacos. And unless I’m also infected with PCB’s also, if it wasn’t a 100 fish day - it was really close!

Interestingly, my buddy caught a real nice catfish trolling a chunk of bass meat in 6’ of water. Whodathunk! Nothin’ like being showed up by someone that doesn’t know any better! And, I cast over a group of carp and snagged one on the tail on my first cast. (What luck!) Great fun to bring in.

The water temps were 58 in the mid day, and 63 in the late afternoon when we left. Boy, the water in the Lindon marina was like green pudding - with whitish blue stuff that looked like someone poured Ajax cleanser over it. I don’t think I’ll ever get it off my vehicles…

Anyways, if you’re interested, I often start out with a tandem rig of plastics, this time it was with mini tube jigs - one was a red/chartreuse and the other a black and green. My buddy used a 1" white curly tail grub. All worked.

If it makes you feel any better, I have lost track of the numbers of trips in years past when I’d swear the fish smell me coming and they text all their buddies to move to the other side of the lake… But yeah, there are plenty in there still!

Pat always has good advice, and maybe you won’t need me to say “GOOD LUCK” now that he’s already told ya to put hooks on yer lures! :sunglasses:
