Tubing Lincoln Beach 3/25/08

:sunglasses:The title for this post should have been “THE WIND DON’T BLOW ON UTAH LAKE…IT SUCKS.”

Once again Flycasting and I believed the weatherman and once again we regretted it. Forecast was for light southerly breezes in the early hours, getting stronger later. That is doable at Lincoln Beach. We launch the tubes, head south and if the wind comes up we get blown back to the vehicle. Right? NOT.

When we drove out on the south dike, Catfishgitter was already there, soaking bait from shore. Said he had one bite before we got there. Us tubers got launched as soon as we could, thinking the pretty sunrise and the calm water were a promise of good fishing. NOT.

**Flycasting launched before I did. Barked over the radio that he had a bite…even before I got in the water. Sokay by me if the other guy scores first. But, when I launched about 8 AM, he had not put a hook into anything yet. **

I started by dragging a minnow and throwing plastics with my second rod. Wasn’t seeing any fish in the water column, so I went to two bait rods. Rigged the second rod with a small chunk of delicious carp meat. Dragged it only a few feet when ZING went my string and my rod went bendo. 8:15 and I had a feisty 24 inch mama cat in my net. This was gonna be a good day. NOT.

**As I finished unhooking the first (and only) kitty, a bit of a north breeze rippled the water. Tyler and I chatted on the walkie talkies about that and laughed. Southerly breezes. Sure. Right. Well, that must have aggravated Mama Nature. She got more serious about those northerly breezes. From then on we were “bounce city”. **

**I have fished Lincoln Beach a bajillion times. Whenever the north wind blows, the fishing sucks. I can count the hands of one finger (whatever) the number of times I have caught any more fish after a north wind comes up. Today only added credibility to my findings. **

Actually, the north breeze started to fade a bit at one point, and I had hope that it would die off and then turn around from the south. Hokay…I started kicking further to the southeast, to fish a couple of favorite spots…knowing that I would not be in trouble since the wind was going to change. NOT.

**During the temporary lull, I kicked another few hundred yards…IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. Then, once Mama Nature was satisfied that she had me well hooked, she reeled me in. The north wind did not die down, but suddenly jumped up and really started puffing. I knew I had been had and started powering my way back to the parking area. **

It was tough. I brought in the bait rods, since I was unable to fish them right. Instead, I kept throwing and retrieving some large plastics. All the time I was maintaining a strong kick to get me back and out of the wind. Tough duty for a fat old man. I am “well seasoned” and have strong tubers’ legs, but that was a workout.

I did get a hook into a nice little walleye. He hit at the end of a long cast and I brought it to within about 10 feet of the tube. Then, once I had seen it, I artfully completed a “conservation release”. The fish was a healthy looking male about 20 inches or so. But, who wants a steenking walleye? Right?

Flycasting and I finally made it to our beach spot and got out. We made a few shore casts while waiting to see if the wind would die down. It didn’t so we left. Catfishgitter had a couple of nice cats on his stringer and he was tucked in out of the wind. I hope he got more after we left.

I could swear that I saw the lake turn to glass in my rear view mirror as we drove away. I know that there were no visible signs of wind anywhere as we drove home. All the flags hung straight down and none of the trees were moving. And, it was absolutely beautiful when we drove back into Salt Lake.

Only saw one boat going out, just as we were getting ready ourselves. Water was a good color of green, with good visibility. Water temps were between 46 and 47 degrees.

The kitties sure are pretty this time of year. It’s nice to see some being caught. I won’t get a chance to hit Utah Lake for about a week, it should be even better by then. I’m going after the west’s only native sunfish early next week.

:sunglasses:Pruess Lake?

Yep. I’ve been meaning to go out there for several years now. I’m taking my boat and tube, just in case I can’t get the boat in the water.

It sucks you got blown off the lake. But that is a pretty fish you have there.

TD-
any pics of the marble eye? thats a nice kitty, thanks for the report.

Just curious, are you retired? I get a little envy in my office when I see all the fishing being done around me! Cant wait for Saturday!:sunglasses:

:sunglasses:Sorry, but that wascally wallie gave me my jig back before posing for a picture.

Here’s a picture of one about the same size if you just gotta see a walleye picture.

Yes, I am retired. Thankfully I was able to get in a lot of fishing before I punched the clock for the last time. If you wanna do more fishing…JUST DO IT. If you ever miss out on a trip you should taken you will be one behind the rest of your life. And, there is no way to ever catch up.

**I had some “heart jolts” (not heart attacks) over the years when I saw guys younger than me suddenly lose their health (or their life) without ever getting a chance to do all those things they planned to do…SOMEDAY. **

Take your responsibilities seriously, but also take some time for yourself. You are the only YOU that you will ever have. Be good to yourself and it is okay to be a little selfish sometimes. You have my permission.

Let us know how you do. I have always wanted to fish that lake and have only had the chance once, but my fishing buddy had some last minute honey do’s that ended the trip,
Jed

Good report.

Your photos are getting better and more artistic all the time. Did you get a new camera?
**

:sunglasses:Thanks fer the kindly comments. Not a new camera. But, I am about ready for a new one. This one is developing a temperamental side. Must be female. (Ouch, ouch).

Actually I have been shooting landscape and scenery stuff for many years. Used to put on slide shows in Arizona of the desert flora and fauna…and lightning, and sunsets, etc. Even sold some of my shots. Only started using a digital about 5 years ago. Still learn new things all the time. Ain’t life (and fishing) wunnerful?

Thanks for the report and nice pictures ya go there. I was thinkin goin out today but had some unexpected visitors stop by today. So now it looks like maybe friday I might get out if the weather is fair. But if it not it won’t be till sometime next week.
I love this time of year can’t telll what it goin to do from day to day or even in 5mins.

Hey Tube.. It was nice to finally meet you guys in person yesterday. Yea it really calmed down after you two left. I had a few more good hits, but landed nothing. I have a feeling that they could have been carp, but I had one take off pretty good towards the bank, and missed him.
Thanks for posting the pic.

Nice work! I need to get out there one of these days…:sunglasses:The eyes are waiting for me to go and catch them.

hi TD
great report. I am from Sacto Ca, here for work and fishing. I brought my tub, but very time I am down in UL (main boat lauch) I want to lauch my tub so bad but afrad of the wind monster. Dang wind would just stop one minut and pickup again. But managed to pickup 3 walleyes on Sunday. Shore fishing. Any ways is there any part of UL that a person can float and avoid the the wind monster.
Heading back to Ca end of this month.

Thanks
Dao

:sunglasses:Welcome to Utah. I lived in Sacto for several years…right on the American River near Watt and Hwy 50. Lots of good fishing memories over there.

There is no part of Utah Lake that is entirely free from wind, but you can tube inside either the State Park harbor or Lindon Boat harbor. Only problem is that the fishing inside has not been much good. Most of the fishing has been outside.

This time of year we are in a “transition”…from winter to spring…SPRINTER. Hard to find any day without wind. But, it can also be some of the best fishing if you hit it right. Especially for walleyes.

Glad you are at least getting some fish. What bait or lures have been working best for you?
