Lincoln Beach Chocolate 4-4-08

:sunglasses:The north wind blew last night. Hate the north wind for fishing at Lincoln Beach. It turns the water chocolate and the fishing takes a couple of days to recover. TubeBabe and I went anyway. She has been out of town a lot an still had not caught a catfish. That’s serious for the “KITTY QUEEN”.

Launched off the sand beach in front of the “facilities” about 7:30 AM. Air temp 24 and water temp only 38 in the shallows. Went to 44 in deeper water. Water clarity was terrible but I decided to throw some plastic first anyhooters. After about fifteen minutes of “washing lures”, I had a nice thump on the black and chartreuse grub I was using. Same lure I had a little wally on last week. Set the hook and had some heavy head shakes. Too hefty for a small wallie. Yeee Hawww! It had to be a big mama. Well…it was…sorta. A big mama carp…a toothless golden walleye. Had the hook in its lips fair and square. I did a little CPR (Catch, Perforate and Release) as my part of the June sucker recovery program.

Finally got out into the 5 foot deep zone and sent out a minnow on my bait rod. Dragged that bait over a lot of underwater real estate, in the muddy water, without so much as a whisper. I was beginning to wonder if that bunged up buglemouth was going to be my only stick bender for the day. NOPE. Pop…zing…line peeled off the reel as a kitty tried to abscond with my minnow. NOPE. I put a hook in the corner of her mouth and persuaded her to swim to my tube…not without some struggling on her part. 24" and a bit over 4 pounds.

**That was at 9 AM. At 9:30 AM TubeBabe announced over the walkie talkie that something had whacked the piece of carp meat she was dragging…but must have been an inexperienced fish. Didn’t know how to hang on. A couple of minutes later she was nice enough to allow the fish a second chance and this time the fish got it right. A 26" 6 pounder. TubeBabe had banished the skunk. **

**At 9:45 the north wind came up. We expected it, since the forecast was for south breezes…again. Two hours later the north wind died for a few minutes. Wiggle wiggle. I caught an ugly mudder. Wham bam…I missed another channel, but TubeBabe landed another one. This one was about 3.5 pounds. **

The north wind came back up and the fishing went back down. We quit at 1 PM. No wallies or whities. I lost one small white bass at the tube. Saw very little on sonar. You can see the brown water in the pictures. Not good.

Water temp when we got out was up to just under 48 degrees. Air temp was only a couple of degrees warmer. Saw several boats go out, and return. Also several vehicles with bank tanglers. Nobody stayed long. The guy that stayed the longest stayed only because he ran the back tires of his two wheel drive pickup over the sharp edge at the end of the dike. He was gunning the engine, smoking his tires and probably putting some serious hurt on his engine and tranny when some nice guy in another pickemup helped pull his sorry behind up onto the dike. Wonder if he learned.

TubeBabe was happy. I let her outdo me on kitties again. I got the first, but she got the biggest and the most (big deal…one more). I managed to get three species, but would have loved to bring in a wallie or two and some white bass…to complete my “grand slime”. Done it before, but not today. Still beats the heck out of almost anything I could have been doing at home.

Nice work on the kitties!! I think I might head out that way on Sunday after some toothy fishies!:sunglasses:

:sunglasses:There were some waders and small boats out on the ledges at the “spot”. Two guys came in while we munched our lunch and neither brought any fish. Didn’t look like much going on with the two small boats either.

I’ll bet the fish will be on those rocks at night though. Heard of a male caught last week that was “dripping”.

Now that “Save the Junies” pic was a classic! My co-worker and I got a good chuckle out of that one.

TD you never fail to amaze me…doesn’t matter the weather or season, you’re out there doing your part with the fishing reports.

Great pic of Timp btw.

AWESOME, TD are you on UWN forum? we could use your awesome reporting on that big puddle in town. I can’t wait to go this sunday ever been up to af harbor any suggestions for a poor shore fisherman? thanks [;)]

:sunglasses:I drop in to read some of the reports on UWN, but have not registered. Not that I am all caught up the “loyalty” thing, because I believe there is room for everybody and every forum has its appeal. I simply do not have the time to spend elsewhere. I can’t even take care of everything that is on my plate with BFT sometimes.

I think there are quite a few folks that visit both forums and if anybody wants anything specifically from me they know where to ask. I don’t flatter myself that I am in high demand, but I am happy to help where I can.

I used to fish AF Harbor a lot, but not much these days. Same with Lindon. I buy an annual pass for Utah State Parks and fish many other spots on Utah Lake that do not require a fee every time I fish. I am not cheap but I just can’t justify paying their fees for little or no benefits. I fish from shore or tube and don’t launch a boat so I don’t use up anything but space. And, if the fishing is lousy…as it is right now…I can get lousy for free.

Best shore fishing in AF is off the points or at the mouth of the river when the white bass and walleyes stack up there. That will be later. After about the first of May, all species are in and around the harbor in abundance and it is a good spot.

If you are shorebound, the dikes off Provo Boat Harbor are a better bet right now. Lindon has been poor both inside and outside the harbors. Same with the Pelican Point harbor on the other side of the lake.

Good luck wherever you end up.

:sunglasses:Hey Derek, it’s a tough business, but somebody’s gotta do it. Not all of us are wimps who wait until summer to put a tube or toon on the water.

Glad you liked the picture. Trying to get it added to the publicity photos for the official June Sucker Recovery Program.

**Yeah, right.

**

Talk about goin the extra mile for those poor little june suckers. PETA should give you some kind of award!

I understand tube dude it is hard to keep up with forums.
Im going to try my luck this sunday at af harbor just because its closer. Thanks for the tips and i can’t wait till UL gets warmer :sunglasses:

I’ve heard from some reliable sources that there are quite a few being caught out there.

:sunglasses:I’d rather go and do the catching myself to prove them right though!

:sunglasses:**There are quite a few being taken…but not by EVERYBODY on EVERY TRIP. **

When conditions are good, the fishing is good. When they are not, it’s not.

Always enjoy your posts and the photo’s keep them comming. We would welcome you over at UWN if you can find the time.

:sunglasses:ScottyP wouldn’t like that. Maybe a couple of others who don’t like the “PVC sword”.

:sunglasses:That sounds a hell of a lot funner than sitting at a desk taking calls all day, even if the fish only cooperated a little. Ah, kittie krispies…Can’t wait to get out there a wrassle some K’s from the tube. I should finally have some time in May… I might have my people contact your people for a Friday a.m. outing… Gotta look at the hole in one of my air bladders first though…
