My buddy and I and our wives will be staying at Fish Lake Lodge for 3 nights this weekend in hopes of a big laker or splake at Fish Lake, and Browns, perch, splake and tigers at Mill Meadow and Forsyth.
I have heard and read a little about possible Musky in both Fish Lake and Mill Meadow but am yet to read an actual report of one being caught. Supposedly there is a good amount at Mill Meadow but again, I have heard no actual reports of one being caught there.
Just wondering if anyone knows anything more specific about Musky in these waters?? Where would you fish for them at Mill Meadow?Where would they likely be in these lakes??
We will probably be targeting the browns, splake and perch at Mill Meadow but would like to leave a musky rod out just in case.
it’s like finding a needle in a haystack…or worse…
Targeting tiger musky in either Mill Meadow or Fish Lake will result in nothing but disapointment. I’d recommend fishing for the species that are managed in those lakes, and if you happen to pull a needle out of a haystack, fantastic!
I think they say they MAY be there because they planted some on Johnson Valley several years ago. However, I have never heard a report of a single one being caught.
There may be tiger TROUT in Mill Meadow, but very doubtful if there are any tiger muskies. Also, that lake drains down pretty shallow some years due to irrigation, especially during the drought years around the time they planted the muskies.
Your chances of catching one at Fish Lake or Mill Meadows are slim to none. We caught a glimpse of one at Fish Lake from my boat last year (it swam by near the surface). If you were able to snowmobile over to Johnson’s Reservoir your odds would go up substantially (although catching tigers anytime, especially through the ice is usually a slow proposition – ask LH2). Have one rod set up for mack fishing and who knows what may swim by.
The plan is to fish the south end of Fish Lake all morning for Macs and then head over to Mac point for splake and bows and macs out at the hump. If I see any big fish come in suspended on my finder, I might have to real up to it. Anyone actually catch one from these lakes?
I think your odds of finding a sucker suspended in 60-80 ft. of water better than finding a Tiger Musky!
Seriously, if you want to catch a tiger musky, you are wasting your time by fishing Fish Lake and Mill Meadow. If you want a tiger musky, go fish Johnson, or Pine View.
Like I said – if you go to Fish Lake or Mill Meadow expecting to get a musky, you are in for disappointment.
Not expecting one and not planning my trip around it. Just wondering if any have been caught with any consistency.
Actually planing the trip around the beautiful scenary, isolation, lake trout, splake, browns, tiger trout and rainbows. A musky would just be a huge plus!!
I was at fish lake several years ago when the biologists were pulling up their gill nets. There was a a tiger musky in one of the gill nets. Tiger musky in any body of water other than johnson res. is the result of the fish moving from johnson resevoir to the other lakes on their own. Johnson resevoir is the only resevoir that has had tiger musky stocked in it. PBH is right about the suckers. There are a fair number of them in fish lake. Who knows you may even find a few carp. gshorthair
i will be down there also this weekend. we are leaving the city on thursday and coming back on sunday. we are staying in holyberry cabin. hope to see ya on the ice. look for the red bearded guy. that’s me. good luck to ya.
We will be staying at lakeside in one of the 4 person cabins. We will be fishing fish lake all day friday (starting at 5 am looking for the macs) and will fish Mill Meadow and Forsyth Saturday morning and Fish lake again Saturday night. Let me know if you want to join at all and I’ll PM you with where we plan to fish.
According to Fish Lake Nat’l. Forest office in Loa, Mill Meadow had the dam breached and won’t be able to fish there until later this year. BUT, double check with them.
AND you need to go to Loa and then north to get to Mill Meadow and Forsyth. I really doubt if it will be worth the drive to either one. You may want to check with the locals and see how Redmond is doing over by Salina/Gunnison area.
When did you hear this about Mill Meadow? We have fished Mill Meadow, Forsyth and Fish Lake in the same trip twice in the past year and do very well at all three lakes. They each have their own advantages and species to chase.
Please update me, anyone, with info regarding mill meadows dam being breached!!
The dam was still in tact the 17th of January.
Do you have the number for the office in LOA?
PBH is right dude.. very unlikeley you’ll even see one at fish lake or mill medows, Jonson’s has some and i have put a hook in 1 or 2 up there.. but even in prime time they are realy hard to catch. i have tryed 2 or 3 times for them up there through the ice.. some trout and small perch was all i had to show for it. if ya could use a bigger bait might help some but 1 inch is all ya get on utah waters for muske.. stick to the lake trout hunt. you’ll be happyer.
