Thoughts about BFT's new web hosting software

From your comment, I’m guessing you aren’t using a bookmark/favorite to log on.  I have no knowledge of your device or skill level.  But I use my computer for 99% of my website browsing.  All of the websites and individual forums I visit every day are accessed through bookmarks.  For example, my bookmark for this forum (Utah Fishing General) uses this URL: https://bigfishtackle.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?fid=58.  I don’t have to type in anything.  I just click on the bookmark and it automatically takes me to this forum and I’m always logged in unless I cleared the cache on my computer.  I don’t ever use my phone for this, but I’m sure you can set up bookmarks or favorites on a phone as well.

Thoughts you say? This site has steadily went downhill from the good old days when members frequently made reports and gave their insight. Not only have members left the site, but fighting the countless ads and having to sign in have become tiresome. There’s less than a handful of members that I recognize anymore, and the info on here is sporadic to say the least. This site has served it’s purpose I suppose, and we’ve lost good people, and I get that changes are inevitable…but myself and many others have seen a steady decline with this site and it’s unfortunate.

Those of you who know me, thanks for the good times. It’s been appreciated for sure. Best of luck and keep those rods bent!

Overall, I think it is an improvement except for one issue - signing in.  I find it annoying as ____ to verify that I am a human EVERY time I log on to the website.  Doesn’t matter that I’m logging on several times a day from the same platform (my home computer), it still requires that I verify that I am a human.

AAAARRRGGH!!!

Rant done.

I just logged on a few minutes ago if I go to bigfish tackle it takes me to a page from 2022. If I go to bigfish tackle.com it brings me here. I don’t know if that matters to the admin or not just a observation.

I can’t disagree with anything you said.  As to ads, I do all my browsing on my computer and never on my phone.  I use an ad blocker on my computer and have not seen an ad in over a decade.  And most of the younger generations all use social media for there posting and info gathering.  I even stooped to using fakebook a couple years back.  The old timers like us are becoming fewer and fewer each year, so the reports are becoming fewer as well.  Be that as it may, tight lines to ya lavaman.

The current condition of BFT reminds me of a Perch yanked from 50 FOW:
Swimming in circles on its side, eyes bulging out, and choking on its own bladder.
It tries to dive to a safe level, but returns to the surface each time, sometimes belly down but mostly belly up.
Even though under our breath we chant “ Go, go down”, we all know the final outcome.
But, if the ‘Powers To Be’ fix the problem Bob is referring to, maybe just maybe BFT will stay belly down and swim to live a little longer.

The new site is just about finished, several members and mods were ask to check the new site to see if all issues that were mentioned have been fixed but once the new site goes live, if you notice anything out of the ordinary please inform one of the mods or myself and we will see if they can be fixed.

The Captcha bot check takes only a few seconds. I can live with that. I also see zero ads. In fact hearing that there are ads here surprised me. I’m also a computer only guy and never browse on a phone. Using the Brave browser eliminates almost all ads. I also have uBlock Origin as an extension to catch any "leakers" and enjoy very rapid page loads and zero ads.

I suspect that a lot of good folks no longer post here after the last major shakeup, which made sign-in difficult at first. I hope that the next version makes that simple. There’s also the difficulty in posting pictures for some. Again, hoping that improves.

Other forum sites outside of BFT have been using the "I am human" verification. I’ve been checking that block for approx. 1½yrs now. I found if I go to another forum the verification soon after leaving one that the verification carries over. Some of these forums are using the same security format. Been used to it for quite a while now. As for the ads, I can deal with some if I must but the one that’s most annoying is a popup scrolling ad that covers 1/4 of the bottom of each page constantly when selected.

As others have mentioned, it’s likely your bookmark and that was where you were when you bookmarked that page. All you need to do is go to the main Utah page and bookmark it there and you won’t go back to that old bookmark. Of course you will need to delete that old bookmark.

I heartily recommend using the Brave browser on any device. It is fast, ad-free, secure, and does not track or report your data. https://brave.com/

I switched from DUCKDUCKGO to BRAVE last year.

For anyone interested. The only thing I can add is using what Bob and Rocky have suggested. Using Brave and the Ad Blocker Origin absolutely works. I now use Brave. I use an Iphone. There’s a little annoyance here and there but I’m having Zero issues lurking here. I would much rather the boring old dudes than the young "I know everything crowds". I don’t do FB, Insta etc. and my life remains much simpler. Ads are a part of life. Annoyances on websites also. My cost for being on this site is zero. The information I receive is worth a mint. BTW the improvements are soooo much better. To each his own.

From what I hear, This is not the new site yet. It’s still coming , I think when it switches over fully . It will be a big upgrade, so be patient. When the new site fully rolls out soon I hope, I think we will be happy.

I assume that notice of the new board and instructions for sign-in will be posted here before this version is shut down. Or at least a divert link from this address to the new one.

I am still waiting to find out exactly when the new site will launch but from what I can gather, when it happens, the old site will be gone and the new site will be in its place. The sign in will be the same, ULR will be the same, as you are using on this site. From what I’m seeing it looks different but until it’s in place it might be the same as what we see today, only time will tell.

That would seem to be the riskier way to do it, but I’m not an IT guy. It will be simpler for all of us, however. If it works.

Hey after being a little bit of a beta tester of the new site, I think you’re all going to like it… I mean it will seem weird, at least different at first, but it seems to fix some of the old glaring issues that made posting the way I like to do it, much easier and I’m actually looking forward to the switchover, just hope we can get everyone across this next hurdle and then maybe, just maybe everyone will start posting a little more… I know folks are still fishing, but I don’t think everyone is posting as much as they used to … Probably comes from not wanting to send an influx of extra pressure that direction… Things even though slow, this is still the spot where lots of folks troll to find the real info and helpful insights… Something about truthful information doesn’t go out of style… Later J

Retired now but was a computer programmer for over 20 years for Blue Cross Blue Shield. Like you said, ‘If it works’, no matter how many times you test a new version/update there is ALWAYS something jumps up and bites you in the rear end that someone didn’t think about.

I just got off the phone from one of the managers and from what he says this new site will be much more user friendly but it’s going to take some time, several weeks to work out all the bugs and get it to where we want it to be. For all of you that don’t like change, I get it but this new site will be what we make it and when problems arise, they can be fixed. The new site will even break down sections, like Strawberry, Utah lake, Willard etc, they will have it’s own section and will be much easier to access the info from those different lakes and rivers because it will be in the same section. Hang in there folks, it won’t be long before we will be looking at the new BFT. I’m sure some of you won’t like it but give it some time and it will get better, as members use it, it will improve and serve your needs better than it ever did.
