We did the Bash last month, and thought we know more than we knew [:/] Needless to say the only thing we caught was the little stripped feller. We’re headed up there (Buckboard) again this week end. We fished north of the marina last time, headed south this time[:p] Just gotta try some of that Burbot. like a quest now[;)] Any pointers from you guys would be appreciated.
Any rocky point. Pre-dill your holes before dark. Sucker meat on anything glow. Fish depths of 12’-25 '.. If you can locate a shelf in the proper depth, near deep water, your better off. It helps to keep you lighting/lanterns on low beam.. I like to keep my lantern in the sled or a bucket to pervent a direact shine on the ice where I’m ling dinging.
The farther south you go it seems the smaller the burbot get. Drill a lot of holes at various depths and fish them all. First hour of dark seems to be the best. Don’t rely on a hole or a set of holes. Movement seems to do better than deadsticking.
Try and avoid areas that have a bunch of recently drill holes. If they look a few weeks old you should be fine because other ling will have moved back in but recent holes from the last few days will likely mean someone has fished the area out. We made that mistake during the BB weekend, we caught a few small ones but no big ones until we moved to a spot with no new holes. Good luck up there and let us know how you do.
A friend and I fished in the Anvil Draw area on Tuesday and Wednesday. We spent the day fishing for macs and got several pups but no big ones. On Tuesday afternoon we took our 4 wheeler directly across the main channel from the Anvil Draw point and set up for Burbot at about 4:30 p.m.. We caught about 10 burbot during the late afternoon/early evening. We used 1/2 oz. glow in the dark tube jigs tipped with a piece of chub. Two of the burbot I caught were 28 to 30 inches. One of the larger ones had a whole 11" smallmouth in it’s stomach. They are eating machines and they will have a very adverse impact on that lake. We fished a rocky point that had larger rock rubble and looked like good smallmouth and crayfish structure. The best depth was about 25 to 30 feet.

hey Bill what day ya going? i’ll send aya a pm on a spot we did ok for the bot’s when we were there..
Pretty much the same advise as above.
I went to Anvil last week and caught a slew over 3 days. Early evening, night, and early in the morning.
Thanks guys for the advise, we’ll see what happens. I’ve got all the stuff you mentioned, had it too the last trip, I think just in the wrong location then. I have a FL-12 Vex, a great machine, but doesn’t show structure, we’ll have a regular LCD fisder this time as well so will be able to find (hopefully) the right structure[;)] thanks again for your post.
During the BB we fished south of buckboard and did not see much of the correct structure. We went a ways and had no luck for burbot between the 4 of us. On our way back we asked every group we past how they did and none did very well. The ones they caught were very small. Our next trip will definitely be north of buckboard. If you use Google maps and try to use the dirt road access, you could save a lot of walking. That is our plan next time. Hope that helps… I am in no way a good burbot angler and am just chiming in my opinion. It seems all the best reports i have seen, have been north and much closer to Lost Dog.
Good luck and be sure to post how you did. I am very interested about getting into those burbot. I dont think what you fish with is as critical as finding them…as with most species.

Chris
At the bash we headed over to holmes crossing and had some success. I plan on going back up there sat. afternoon. I will be in a Winnabago motorhome with a “Wild” 2 man ice hut. I am hoping to be there by 5 pm..
we also fished closer to buckboard during the bash with limited success. fishing friends of mine did much better south of buck board in holmes crossing area than we did. not sure if going north is the right answer. the only reason that it was good earlierwas that it iced earlier but has been hit very hard with very few areas not being fished. i agree with other fisherman who find new areas or areas that have not been hit in recent days. and can also catch some of the bigger fish during the day in deeper water. give it a try…
