BigEnough, Izzi and me hit the cliffs around Lost Dog for burbot last nite. We fished from 4:30 - 9:30 PM. The final tally was 29 burbot.
Fishing Depth - 30’ - 37’

Bait - Glo jig head w/sucker meat

We stayed in the same spot and didn’t move. The ice was 3-4 inches. We do good getting burbot anywhere along the rocks across the way from the Lost Dog parking area. Best fishing/catching was from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.

I am heading to Rock Springs tomorow after work to spend time with my Grandparents. I have the mourning of the 24th free to go ice fishing and was considering going over to lost dog. I have never been there before and was looking for some good advice.
I hear that it is a waste of time to go after burbot during the day, is that true ? and what other kinds of fish will I find during the day and jigs and bait works the best ?
Hope you won’t mind giving out some secrets, but I am excited for my first ice of the year.
Also, I have a non resident WYO year fishing license but am not real familiar with the regs. Somewhere I thought I read on this site that you need to label your ice shelter and poles ?

We caught a bunch of burbot between 24" and 28", but none hit the 30" mark. Are 30" burbot getting more common in the Gorge? Are you finding the bigger burbot at a different depth?
Great report Crawler, thanks for posting it, how far would you say the walk across to the cliffs was from the lost dog side?
make sure you have each pole or tip up labeled with each anglers name if you are using more than 2 last year we had a game warden sneek out on the ice in the dark 2 check people and some guys 50 yards from us got a ticket for not having their name on each pole. You are supposed to have your name and address on any type of shack.

When you say “Bait - Glo jig head w/sucker meat”, do you mean that you don’t use any type of tube or soft plastic? … just the jig head and tip it with sucker meat?

I’ve never fished for burbot and the burbot bash will be my first time for that so I’m looking for info so that I can make the long trip well worth it.

I use glow jig heads with a radical glow tube and sucker meat. Any glow tube will work, but charge it up often. I tried an Auto Jigger the entire night and did not catch a single burbot with it. If anyone knows how to catch burbot using an Auto Jigger I need some help??? All the burbot were caught with a person behind the jigging rod.
i have caught alot over 30’’ but thay all seem to be down lake dont ask me why. have caught them up into the 35’‘-37’‘on the koke spawning beds @holmes. as far as the jigger push it down the hole for structure and dead stick every rod burbot dont like a lot of movement.last yr i did very good with a glow 1/4oz head and a 6’‘-8’‘chub on my tip ups in 10-20ft even got them as deep as 2 hole ft have caught them up to 110ft jigin for lakers . thay do like the rock structure but dont need it have found several spots with big piles of weeds and tumbleweeds that hold the old burb to but i really think thay just cruzze allnight. thay eat big so big baits are a great go to have got them on stuff up to 8’'my 2cents
fishley those are some big ling can you post some pictures of some of those 35 to 37" inch ling you have been catching those are some hogs.

It’s about 300 yds from the parking area to the cliffs on the other side. Burbot fishing is good along the cliffs or down the main lake channel on the cliff side (around the corner from the cliffs).
Right, just a glo lead head with sucker meat on it. Some people fish a glo grub on a lead head and tip it with a small piece of meat. I also use dead minnows when I can get cheap enough. I’ve also caught them by using frozen shrimp (uncooked) for bait. Instead of the high dollar sucker meat I stop at Smiths and buy Tailpia (spelling), the whole fish and use that meat for bait also. I don’t think the burbot are real picky.

Dang! 29 Burbot. I don’t think in other states where there is Burbot they catch that many do they?
Is Lost Dog in the Wyomin’ part of the Gorge?
And by the way what do Burbot taste like?

Lost Dog is on the north end, just south of Green River, Wyoming. Some people really like burbot, I love to fish for them but give most away. They really don’t have much taste. The tail section seems to be a little more tender than the back. Maybe I’m wrong!
