Sturgeon again 9/27-29

What an amazing sturgeon trip! We had a little bit of everything happen. The weather was breezy, much of the time, but the wind always blew from the east (which is down river, so one can still detect most bites) and it was unseasonably warm.

I hooked the first sturgeon and gave Jon (newbie) my rod to reel in the fish. I try to make sure the new anglers get a feel for the power of these fish. Of course, “No good deed goes unpunished.”, and I didn’t hook another sturgeon for almost seven hours, and during that time Jon landed three of his own.

Twice we landed doubles. Jon hooked a sturgeon and we were busy getting the other rods reeled in and tossing the anchor rope, when I grabbed Jon’s second rod to reel it in. Jon had attached a bell on this rod and it didn’t ring. Nothing was happening with his line until I started to reel in and I immediately felt a large sturgeon on the other end. Jon landed his smaller sturgeon and I handed him his other rod to finish reeling in his larger fish. It ended up being the large fish of the trip at 7’10” (approximately 259 pounds and 43 years old).

I had another rod snap on me, this one in two places and on only a 5 ½’ sturgeon. Strange that I have been fishing for sturgeon all of these years and never had a rod snap, until this year, and then to have two of them break.

On one cast Jon had several bites and swung and missed multiple times. After each swing he would reel in the slack and was getting closer to the boat. Eventually, he was fishing straight down and the fish kept biting. He would drop his bait to the bottom again and again and would immediately get another bite. I have never seen anything like that while sturgeon fishing. After doing that a few more times he snagged (yes, snagged in the side) a nice sturgeon. I decided there must be a school of sturgeon under the boat so I dropped my bait straight down and almost immediately caught a sturgeon. We moved the boat back to our tossed anchor and I hooked another one in short order doing the same thing. During the trip we caught around 1/3 of the sturgeon vertically jigging. Catching them that way is tons of fun and I always hope that one doesn’t immediately jump and land on the boat (so far that hasn’t happened).

At times, it may be a couple hours between bites and during that time it can be difficult to always stay awake (we fish from sun up to sun down). Twice, we had to wake one of the anglers to let him know that he had a fish on. One fish was jumping before we got his attention and the second time a sturgeon was trying to bend his rod under the boat. We had a fun time teasing him – all in good fun.
Final count was 42 sturgeon landed and one large one came unhooked before we were able to see it.

Jon landed 17 (I need to quit being such a gracious host).[;)] Another great outing and it was a pleasure to fish for sturgeon with Rob again and I also had fun fishing with Jon.

Hopefully, Rob and Jon will post up some pictures.

**That broken rod looks familiar.

You sure are tough on tackle. That was a heavy blank. Must have been the residual juju from the rod you broke before I added the new extension.

I’ve had them jump and bump the boat. I mostly fish vertically. How bad was the moss?

There was no shortage of moss, but the almost-constant wind kept most of it along the shoreline.

Did you catch any sturgeon using fish for bait like you reported on a recent trip or was you using traditional bait?

I tried both grayling and chub for bait. I got a couple bites on grayling, but didn’t hook anything, so not sure if they were sturgeon or not. All sturgeon, with the exception of one that was caught on a Gulp Minnow, were caught on pickled herring.

Great report Kent, is 42 sturgeon caught on this trip a record for you? You caught a sturgeon on a Gulp Minnow!![crazy] Wow, that is crazy, were you casting for something else or purposely try to catch one on the gulp minnow?

Randy and I caught 41 sturgeon on a trip in 2009. So 42 would be a new record, but I believe 41, with two anglers, beats 42 with three anglers. It was a strange trip, 13 caught on Tuesday, 24 caught (and one large one came unhooked) on Wednesday, and only 5 caught on Thursday (we quit fishing around 3:30 on Thursday). I have never had a trip that we did great all three days. A small front moved through Thursday morning and that may have turned them off a bit.

I mentioned to Jon that I had caught several sturgeon, on a prior trip, on Gulp Minnows and he threw one on (no other bait) and in short order caught a sturgeon. Jon also tried a Gummy Bear, but that generated zero bites. They will bite Gulp Minnows, but I still believe Herring is a superior bait.

Wow, that is pretty amazing, how long were these gulp minnows that Jon was using?

The ones I used were 2 1/2" long, and Jon, can say for sure, but they looked to be smaller than mine. Not sure why you consider it amazing that they will bite a Gulp Minnow.

Well all I can say is that was a pretty good trip!! I’ve had a few injury’s in life lateley that have slowed me down a bit. ( I was using a walker to get around) and I asked Kent if I could join him on a trip this year, I’ve never really had the time off of work to do a trip mon_ Thur. I have been really working my body out knowing I was going to have to give it my all on this trip, and I’m glad I did. Kent and rob kept me pretty busy all trip, no resting here it was go go go. Once a person gets a fish on all the others have their own work to do ( releasing the anchor rope, reeling all outher lines in, lift the outboard up, watch for the boat getting to close to the big rocks down river) it takes team work to get these fish in!!! Both guys made a great well needed trip come together. And I got pretty Lucky to catch what I did. I tried some new things and got lucky enough it worked out. Kent and rob thanks again. Its a memory I won’t forget.

can you still catch them in November?

Yes, but it can be downright cold in a boat unless one times the weather just right.

Kent, what part of the Snake are you fishing?? I have been up there around Burley, but have not heard of any Sturgeon in that area. Are you below Twin Falls or ??? Looks like you were having a great deal of fun !!

Around Mountain Home.

Thanks again Kent…I enjoyed the company and the fishing.
I first went Sturgeon fishing with Kent in 2001. Since then I have been many times…some with Kent and many times on my own with family and friends.
There is just something about having a big fish on the line…

Not sure why you consider it amazing that they will bite a Gulp Minnow.
Because they are an artificial bait, and that just seemed amazing to me that they would hit anything artificial like that but I guess its the scent that draws them to it.

I think you are guessing correctly. Pat also told me about guys occasionally catching them on lures. They are more like other fish than I believe we give them credit. I have often wondered when I have started reeling in and feeling nothing on my line and then suddenly feel a sturgeon if one somehow grabbed my bait while I was reeling. Even with their mouths pointing down I believe they chase bait at times.

Many Sturgeon are caught while salmon fishing on the Columbia - they bite jigs, spin-n-glows, Roe, and flatfish. Just about anything that has scent put on it…

They are masters of there domain unless Sea-Lions come into the picture :frowning:

They’re opportunists.
Saw one caught on a rattle trap.
They’ll bite most bait placed in front of them.
They vacuum up sand and filter for food, I’ve spent many an hour watching them in raceways.
Maybe Rangens sturgeon chow on a hook?
Night crawlers with a corky work well in summer.
Caught many nice bass where your fishing Kent.
Hope the river gets some water when the irrigation stops next week
You ready Curt?
Gertrude is running well.
