Strawbery 9/27/08 w/ Kentofnsl and Nkunz..

On the water by about 7 am, tried over by Mud Creek and nothing, went over to the north end of Strawberry Bay and not much there either, hit the Ladders and I think Kent boated a couple and I maybe had one. Pretty slow all morning so we headed over towards Renegade in the afternoon and it started to pick up, fish came in streaks but it stayed fairly steady until about 6 p.m when we left. No wind until the later part of the day. We all caught some pretty nice fish, mostly Cutt’s but a few Bows’ in the mix. Lots of fish caught in 6’ of water and shallower. White tube jigs tipped with chub was the ticket (again)

Thanks for posting your report Remo, too bad the catching was so slow but at least it picked up before the day was over. How big were the largest fish you guys caught? WH2

I think Kent or Neldon caught one close to 5 lbs. but I still think length wise it was below the slot, but we caught quite a few nice fish 2-3 lbs.

It ended up not being too bad of a day; however, we had to work to find and catch them. Vertical jigging just wasn’t happening, but fortunately we were able to locate some that would respond to a tube jig casted and retrieved. The largest fish were just under the slot and probably weighed right at 3 pounds (I think on 1 or 2 that we thought weighed more my lip-grip scale was not set correctly). Mike really schooled us, and had it not been for him going through a dry spell near the end of the day it would have been much worse. Great weather, fun guys to fish with and some cooperative fish. It doesn’t get much better than that.

**Apparently we just missed each other. Sounds like we put in right before you and took out right after. **

We were also at Renegade in the later afternoon - about the time when the clouds moved in and it drizzled a little bit.

**Although we were in a couple of the same places (Ladders and Renegade), we didn’t see you guys untill we took out - y’all were just finishing up with Kent’s boat when we got to the ramp. **

And how did you do?

“Close to 5lbs” or “right at 3lbs”
Thats a big difference for being in the same boat

**I think we did pretty good almost every where we went. We hit 7-8 different locations and we all caught fish in most of them. **

**It wasn’t one of the legendary stellar Strawberry days, but, we caught quite a few fish. The largest was about a 23 inch cutthroat, and we took home a real fine several pounder rainbow, a smaller rainbow and a below the slot cutthroat. **

**We used a variety of techniques to catch fish; Vertical jigging, casting jigs, drop shotting, throwing crankbaits, and drift fishing…with vertical jigging being the most productive. **

I think the key for us was location, timing and technique - i.e. pick the right place, be there at the right time and do the right thing - then move when the fish quit biting.

Yes it is. My scale gripper has a large rivet on it that one has to make certain is in the slot designed for it. If it is not in that slot it holds the scale partially open and as a result will reflect a weight that is erroneously high. I believe on at least one fish the rivet may not have been properly aligned.

:sunglasses:A “loose rivet”, huh? Never thought of using that as an excuse for exaggeration. I never sneeze to be amazed at the creativity of the angling mind.

Thanks for the reports remo, kent, and hound.

What were the water temps? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

I gota know for my research paper.

57 in the morning and warmed up to almost 60 in the PM.

Thanks Kent … This warm weather is causing havic with my weekend plans. I was hoping that by now those edges were down to 55 or below.

There was a discusion on this thread about my lip gripper scale giving a misreading if the rivet is misalligned. In an attempt to try to explain what I was talking about I took a few pictures of my gripper. BTW – i have tested the scale with the rivet properly aligned and found it to be accurate.

Where the rivet is supposed to be before one weighs a fish.

What the gripper looks like if the rivet is not properly seated. Notice on the next picture that the scale starts at 5 pounds when the rivet is not properly seated. Every fish weighing 5 pounds or less will register as weighing 5 pounds.

Thanks for clearing that up Kent, I would hate for anyone to think that us fisherman would lie about the size of a fish!!!:sunglasses:

ken try weighing one of your down rigger balls, that will give you a acutate weight weter your rivit is alinged or not.

Thanks for clearing up what you were talking about. Since the scale showed 4 1/4 when we weighed my fish the rivet must have been in the right place.

Never doubted it for a second … but then again, I’ve fished with you a bunch of times and know your tendency for being “accountingly” accurate about things.

Thanx for writing that ledger entry and providing the appropriate “paper” trail though. Some folks may not know that you’re a [#808000]Completely Professional Angler.[/#008000]

It might also help another person who may experience the same scenario with their lip gripper at some point.
