**This “spring” has been long and cold. Water temps on Starvation are lower than they usually are at this time of year. Fishing has been slow for walleyes and perch but they are there…just deeper and slower. **
**The two better spots for tuber and some bank tanglin’ are Knight Hollow and Rabbit Gulch. But, Indian Bay often sees some of the best early perch jerkin by folks confined to shoreline fishing. Depending on weather and water temps the fish could be anywhere from 15’ deep to over 30 feet deep. You will probably have to really look for them. **
**Take a variety of jigs…in a variety of colors. They hit anything from white to black and all of the “hot” colors in between…chartreuse, fire tiger, etc. They are patterning both on small perch and on mud worms around the weed beds. Plain old worms will often get bites where something more exotic might not. **
Still early for fishing crankbaits or any other lures at higher speeds. But, you might get some rainbows or a nice brown.
Here are a couple of maps to help.
TubeDude,
Thanks for the maps. Is it possible to launch a drift boat at the locations you mentioned? I’ve never been there. When I saw only one formal boat ramp at the state park I was discouraged. However, if there are other spots that would be great.
You can launch from the pavement of the old highway at either Rabbit Gulch or Indian Bay. The only developed ramp is at the main state park facilities but there are lots of spots you can launch a small to medium sized boat.
BFTer FOD fishes from a drift boat and he launches from the shore at Knight Hollow a lot. There are a couple of places there with easy access.
There are also several good launch sites at Rabbit Gulch when the water is up…as it is right now.
My suggestion is to get one of those blue and white maps and make a trip out there to conduct a drive and look expedition. Go fishing early and WHEN the wind comes up get off the water and start reconoitering potential launch spots for future trips. Make your notes on the map.
NOTE: Water levels can drop a lot during the course of a year, as water users drain the lake. You will have to learn the spots to launch during different water levels. If the lake is really low in late summer or fall you will likely be launching from the old highway at either Rabbit Gulch or Indian Bend. If you try to launch elsewhere you can get bogged down in the mud exposed by the falling water levels.
I might be fishing the inlet this week from shore, most likely during the morning. The drift boat I use is not always available for me but I would gladly show you where I launch from. It is easy to do if your strong enough to push the boat off the trailer. You only need about a foot of water, I don’t even get my truck wet. Let me know when you plan on launching and I will try to get out there to help you out. What TD said about getting the heck off that lake if the wind picks up is %100 accurate. Rowing in the waves that that lake can deliver can be exhausting and tricky. I usually don’t venture too far out do to the fact that the wind picks up without warning sometimes and gets nasty. I would never want to be caught in the middle of the lake when that happens. [fishon]
Thanks for all the good info!! I greatly appreciate all the help and advice you so freely share on the forum.
Glad to help.
**Starvation has become a real favorite with tubers and tooners on the board. We have several group gropes out there during the better months. You would be welcome to show up and get some pointers on good spots, etc. **
Takes a while to get to know that lake but once you know the basics you can usually do pretty well.
All, thank you for the info. I greatly appreciate it.
FOD. You should have a pm. If not, let me know.
