Starvation Different

Fish Starvation Saturday and Sunday, first trip ever to Starvation. Had very high expectations, due to my cousins
billing of the place. We fished from his boat. He likes to be captain, captain makes the rules and changes the rules.

The lake is very scenic, way nicer than I had pictured from driving by. Lots of nice and varied structure in and out of the water. Some very nice beaches.

We caught 6 species, Perch, Walleye, Small Mouth, Rainbow, Chub (Keeper) and a Cutthroat. Missed any browns I guess. Everything was small except the trout.
Trout fishing was very good trolling. Chartuse needle fish worked best, but so did worms, rapalas. We jigged the and crankbaited the warm water fish. Some vertical jigging as well.

Perch were istsy bitsy. In fairness we saw people with very nice perch, and maybe we could find them or didn’t know how. Walleye were small, small mouth were tiny to small. Chub was nice. Trout were great.

I am disappointed in the size of the fish overall. Maybe my expectations were to high. If I lower my expectations, then I am more often pleasantly surprised.

Good trip, nice lake, variety yes. It is like this, would you like a sampler pack of all the budget beers, or just a good 18 year old Scotch.

Different things float everyones boat.

I think size is definitely down this year. With the exception of trout, 90% of the fish we caught this weekend were not destined for the knife. Caught probably a hundred perch, walleye and SMB; I think we kept 4 or 5 walleye, 2 perch and 1 bass. Three of the walleyes were between 22-24" though, so they’re in there.

The slimers definitely kept us busy though and they were all hogs.

Well I’m glad the trout treated you well at least. How big were they, if you had to guess?

I was up there end of May and consistently caught the biggest smallies I’ve ever caught out of Starvation. Just like everything else, timing is everything.

We landed probably a hundred of them and didn’t take one under 13" with 90% being in the 15"-20" range. Had 3 or 4 over 20. Biggest were a 24" brown and a 24" bow.
