RVing to Alaska

Currently in Prince George for our 3rd night, we picked up James Ashton and Cassidy Ashton (daughter and son in law) at the airport Sunday evening after arriving earlier in the afternoon. Found a nice RV park Northern Exposure that is great,
Monday we ran over to Vanderhoof where my wife lived for 8 years when she was little. The current owner let us look around and chatted quite awhile. Apparently the family who bought the house from her parents have had it in their family sense.
Tom and I ran around town 1st thing to find some fuses to replace the 1 that had blown on my solar panel, we did find something that is working but selection is limited. Of course if we were back in the states you could get them in a day off of Amazon but that is a different animal up here lol. We both had an issue with the electrical in the RV’s when we got to Farewell Bend, apparently inverters, converters and solar chargers don’t play well with lithium batteries. All of the devices trying to control the charging makes the BMS in the batteries react but shutting down the batteries. Turn off the converter and all is good.
Today we ran back south to a gold rush town named Barkerville, lots of old buildings and docents to give the history and tell stories. Had a great time looking at the exhibits and equipment. Tomorrow we head to Dawson Creek which is the start of the Alaska Highway, I’m sure a few are wondering what fuel prices are like, we have been paying around 5.30 US a gallon for diesel after the liter and exchange rate adjustments. Washington had the worst prices at over 6.60 a gallon.

Appears to be a wonderful trip thus far. Thanks for sharing, Alan.

Great report and pics Alan, looks like a great trip so far, thanks for including the fuel prices. Glad you got the fuse issue figured out, no fun dealing with problems like that, while on the road.

Thanks for sharing Alan. Looks beautiful up there.be safe .Bill

Great interesting info, thanks for sharing . Hope all goes well on the rest of your adventure . Safe travels.

Sounds like a lot of fun so far… You have any miles per day goals, or are you just taking it as it comes and drive until you see a fun spot to stop? Sounds like the fuel isn’t anymore there than it is here, so that’s good… except for the fact it’s all way to high lately… Will be looking forward to more reports… Later J

The itinerary is set up for 250-300 miles a day so we can stop and see stuff that we want

We hit Dawson Creek aka mile 0 of the ALCAN on Wednesday and headed north from there. Today is Sunday and are a day away from Dawson City of the Gold Rush era in the Yukon. We’ve stopped at Watson Lake and the sign post forest. It’s taken us almost 7 days to get to the top of BC, the size of this country is amazing. There are areas you dive for miles and see no roads going off the highway. So far we’ve seen 19 black bears along the road, numerous moose and stone sheep. Rivers and streams are running high and off colored from runoff so we haven’t tried fishing any areas yet. Weather has been good with some rain showers here and there.

Great pics and report on your trip Alan, thanks for sharing it all with us. I told you you would see a lot of wildlife but until you see it all, it’s hard to put it into words. Crazy beautiful and amazing.

Yes great pics and info !! Keep up the posts!
Thanks for sharing!

Sign post forest, very cool to see every location about covered from visitors. Card games in camp each evening are helping with relaxing after a days driving which is about 5 hrs each day and 220 miles

I had thoughts for a very long time of that drive to Alaska. I know I’m missing a lot. Thanks for the pics.

That signpost forest has expanded greatly since I was there. Lots of room in your fifth wheel

Thanks for sharing Alan and safe travels there and back. Give me a call after you get back and are fully recovered and let’s fish. :slightly_smiling_face:

Curt, that is the inside of my sisters 5er which is 4’ longer then ours. The pics of the sign post area is probably only showing maybe 20% of what it covers

We only saw it from where we pulled up in front, we never walked in but it looked pretty big.

Wow I’m amazed it took that long to cross BC, what a fun trip for you guys… Hope everything is going well… That’s a lot of miles to put on the vehicles, crazy when you need oil changes along the way… Thanks for sharing the trip I love checking it out… Later J

Our 3 days in Dawson,YT the gold rush history is very interesting. What it took to get people and supplies into this area is crazy. We visited numerous shops and museums in town, evening entertainment at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s,drove up to the midnight dome out to the original gold strike site along with a tour of the largest floating dredge ever built “Dredge #4. We have also reached the area of the midnight sun, after going to Gertie’s for their 2nd time, the kids took a picture of themselves by the RV at 12:43am. Thank goodness for the blackout curtains in the RV. Tomorrow we head into Alaska.

Sure looks like we bypassed a lot of stuff on our hurried trip to Alaska and back, 30 years ago. Great pics Alan

You definitely could spend a bunch time in the Canadian provinces
