Rumor has it that a 10+ pound wiper was caught in Willard last week, shattering the existing state record. According to a source, there are pictures in the Riverdale Sportsman’s Warehouse. Supposedly, the fish has been verified by the DWR. Has anyone else heard anything about this?
Wow, that would shatter the old record. Here is a picture of a 30 inch, 11 pound wiper, just so people can get an idea. [inline 30inchwiper.JPG]I hope someone has first hand info on this new catch. Here is a 27 inch, 9 lb fish for comparison.[inline 27inchwiper.bmp]

Well, I just got back from looking at it and the size is between the two fish I posted. It was caught by Rob Valdez on 05/03/07. Very nice fish.

Do you know if he killed it or turned it back? I’m assuming that he killed it. Sure would like to see a few more of those fish get that size!

At Sportsman’s, there was just a picture with the guy holding the fish in what looked like his yard. There was a date on it, with the weight(10 lbs) and New State Record was written across the picture. That was it, no other info, that is why I was hoping someone knew him so we could get more info? Maybe the DWR site will post something about it this week.
Yea, it’s a dead fish allright but there could be another one as big or bigger some where in Willard. Someone better catch it or them before summer or they will die with the low water. According to Tom Petengale(SP?) that is the reason the wipers never got any bigger in Willard. The bigger wipers need deep water to make it through the warm summer months. In the past two summers we have had record high water levels in the summer, I believe that has given the wipers the chance to get that bigger size. It would also explain why the record was broken twice last year and again this year.In the middle of the summer for the last two years I have marked water that was 29 and 30 foot deep. The water is cooler in those areas and that(and lots of baby shad) is what it takes to make big wipers. Could the record be broken again before the heat of summer kicks in, I would say yes, lets just hope it is one of us BFT members that catch it[;)]
