After fishing Mantua last weekend the ice was good and should have been better by this weekend. However, the rain and warm temps may have jeopardized the integrity of last weekend’s ice. Does anyone have info on if Pineview or Mantua has good ice…im looking to go somewhere close?
I just talked to DWR officer Dave Beveridge who was at Pineview and Causey this morning (12/22) He reported that anglers were on the ice in the narrows–no report of fishing success though. He did say that anglers were catching splake at Causey.
Hope this helps!
Pineview has about 6" of ice. 2" of frozen slush on top of 4" of solid ice. It was safe to walk on, but no ATVs were there today.
Perch were very small and we didn’t find the crappie.
who ever told you 6in is full of crap. I was up there yesterday and there is only 4in of solid ice. i fished in 2in out in the middle of the narrows. Slush and water on top of ice dont count in the thickness
I was there this morning.
The slush from yesterday is frozrn solid now.
You can see footprints from yesterday where today, I
walked across to the South side. The same ice thickness or even better is over on that side.
What I said was that there is 4" of solid ice and on top of it is a new layer of ice. This ice is clowdy and softer, but even I could walk on it with no signs of weekness or cracking.
When I augered through the ice, I could feel a soft spot between the old ice and the new.
This is why ATV’s or Snowmobiles should not be on the ice yet.
In fact, if I go back to Pineview again, I will take my power auger because the ice was hard to cut with my hand auger today.
how is the fishing? Last year it was great.
The fishing was slow, but we did ice a lot of very small perch.
I also hooked up with 2 Tiger Muskie and got to see them both at the hole before they broke my line and swam off.
