Pelican Lake

Went to Pelican Lake last week Thurs night and Fri morning with my friend and caught a bunch of fish (~100). The water was warm 71, and the flies and mosquitos were everywhere. The first night (26th) we got into the bluegill and lmb pretty good. The largies were about the same size as the bluegill at first , 8", and then they started to get larger. I caught several larger bluegill that fought like they were bass. My friend started top watering and had several large bass take it. Then the flies started hatching. We had on 40% deet and the mosquitos were still biting, and gnats and mayflies were hatching. The next morning we got into the bluegill pretty good in the same spot (west side of the lake in about 10’ of water) and had some lmb show up. I was using a black and white small tube jig 3’ below a bobber catching both bluegill and smaller largemouth. My friend was using a larger salt and pepper brown tube jig 4 feet below a bobber and was catching the large largemouth, the top was probably about 3 lbs. We switched to 3-5 depth rapalas and were catching a good amount of largemouth and even bluegill were taking 3" rapalas (baby bass looking lure). We started throwing spinnerbaits and the bass were enjoying those as well. Then 9 am came and the flies were at it again, as well as our friend the sun, so we called it quits. We got sick of sitting in the 90 degree heat so we decided to go on the lake again. Wind started blowing pretty good (our anchor wouldn’t hold us) but I caught ~10 bluegill in less than a half hour and he had some top water success again. Then we moved to the middle of the lake and a large largemouth decided to take his 3" salt/pepper brown tube jig right of the cast. His bobber disappeared and started reeling. It looked like nothing was on, but the smart bass was swimming towards the boat. He reeled fast enough and we got a glimpse of the basstard. As soon as he saw us trying to net him, he took off into the weeds and got snagged. We started the motor up and pulled the anchor in chasing after the sob and he came loose. He ran again and we chased him down. He was stuck in the weeds good. We circled around trying to get him loose, but he wasn’t coming out. After a couple more circles to break him loose, the line broke and he was gone. That was exciting, but I wish my buddy would of landed that fish. Overall, the trip was a success and I will definitely fish the lake again, but maybe in may or later in summer, when the flies/mosquitos aren’t so prevalent. As soon as I can I will post pics from my cell phone, because the digi was out of commission.

[fishin] that cool man, i hope i can hit tha lake sometime this summer…
