Fished Pelican Friday Dec. 18 with my bud BIGbites. We got a late start and it was 10am by the time we got a line in the water. That didn’t matter too much though because the catching was pretty much non-stop. One of those trips when you just have to take your jig out of the water so you have a chance to eat a sandwich. The catching was that fast.

We fished out from the Highway on the east side of the lake. I measured the ice at 8" thick and it is in very good condition with the exception of some water that was on top of the ice near shore when we headed back in for the day at 4pm.

We used Maniac orange Cutter bugs and green Gizzy bugs tipped with mealworm, waxworm and power bait. We started out tipping with mealies but went through 30 of them real fast, so then we tipped with waxies, and after that we tipped with green power bait. It all worked.

We estimate we caught 100-ish bluegill between the two of us. We also caught a total of seven bass. The smallest was 11" and the largest was 14". Most of the bluegill we caught were 8" to 9" with two measuring very close to 10" but not quite. We took 15 nice gills and two bass home for dinner.

Now is a great time to take kids out to Pelican to get into some fast bluegill action.

Thanks for the report. I was sooooo close to going out there today but decided to go the the pheasant club to run the dogs and did a drive by at Sand Wash. Way to go on the gills. I kinda regret not going out. Tomorrow will be a toss up where I end up. I still need to get back to Starvation. Although you had a good report today and I talked to some guys at Sand Wash that said it was about 6 inches of ice and they limited out on rainbows… tough decision huh?.. anyway thanks for the report, I was very curious today on how pelican was doing.

Your making me itchy to get over there, but the wife and I can’t make it until the 8th. I know first ice is usually the best fishing. Thanks for the pictures. Great place to take kids, we had our grandkids there 2 years ago and they had a ball even though it was below zero in the mornings.
