New license for 12 and 13 year olds

[reply] And you comment it is “our” money. What’s up with that? I didn’t give any of my money to the feds to fish and hunt in Utah. I did however pay it to Utah and would like to have a say as to how it is used. Nor have i paid any taxes (that I know of) to directly support any of these programs to the fereral govt. [/reply]

YES, YOU DID. If you bought a fishing hook, lure, line, rod, fly, swivel, or ANY other fishing related thing…YOU PAID Dingle-Johnson surtaxes. If you bought anything hunting related, YOU PAID Pittman-Robertson surtaxes. If you let the other states have the share that we paid, they are getting OUR money. If you bought it in Utah, you also paid Utah sales taxes. If you bought it in another state, you still paid Dingle-Johnson, or Pittman-Robertson taxes.

As long as you’re gonna donate the $5 for a license so somebody else’s kid can go fishin’, how 'bout ya cough up the $20 in gas that it takes to get them there? Or, how 'bout the $15 in snacks? Got a car they can drive for free? Better yet, let’s make it a welfare state where nobody pays for anything, and we all have the same wages, no matter what we do, or don’t do for a living. Harsh? Yep. Life’s a beach.

Well said Fishrmn,
Road ,the problem with your “plan” is that I would bet there are alot more people in support of the License than not and people who don’t want to tak on another two dollars. and I am sure that that Program wouln’t get abused by people who have money and still send there kid down to get a free license. That is the problem everybody wants things for free and people like you want to give it to them by paying there way, I don’t care if they are 12 it is a fine age to learn a little responsibility and pay some of thier activties.

Marty, I see where you’re coming from bro. I grew up in a house where bills were tight at times, and while my mom and dad were at work I made sure that my brother and I had the house cleaned and dinner ready. But I still had time to do stuff.

So with your scenario, several kids, older sibling and so on, the kid I guess would have to have some free time to fish I assume. So he has time to mow ONE lawn for $5… and the rest of the year he collect pop cans on his way home from school so he can pay for the next and so on. Where there is a will, there is a way.

What happens when he turns 14, and has to come up with a full license fee? Should he ask for a freebie then? I don’t think so.

You mentioned the DWR loaning gear out… well that’s great! Great program… but where does the money come from to fund it?

It’s all good man… I think you have stated your beliefs very well, and I have stated mine. I guess the one thing we can agree on, is to disagree.

When we hittin’ Willard again? :sunglasses:

I still beg to differ with you. The taxes you are whinning about WE are getting back. You bought a license didn’t you? Dosen’t that count? I think you want more than our share along with the stae. Greed as i said before makes the world go round.

and you said:
"As long as you’re gonna donate the $5 for a license so somebody else’s kid can go fishin’, how 'bout ya cough up the $20 in gas that it takes to get them there? Or, how 'bout the $15 in snacks? No your just being silly. No one ever suggested that we all get everything for free. When my kids were to young to drive they road their bikes to go fishing.

If it cost you all that to go fish can I come along. It rarely ever cost me anything like that to go. Yes my trips north or south may (in gas money only) but then I choose to do that as an adult. Not a 12 year old who couldn’t get to sand hollow. I never advocated paying for those who can pay their own way just thsoe less fortunate than us who can not. With that I will sign off and let ya rant at what a commie I must be. For me this thread has ended. Good luck and as I said before I hope you never need the help.

You make a good point there Tyler, he will become 14 and have to pay then. I grew up on a farm I always had chores and i don’t mean the dishes (did them too). And I still found time to fish and other things. My only oint is that i would hate to see some kid not be able to go when he was young. At 14 he/she is starting to get interested in other things. They may never take up the sport after that.

Ahh the gear that you asked about comes from you and me. It is mostly donated by fisherman. I have more than a few rod and reels out there. Trying to get wally world, sportsmens, and cabelas to pop for a few items. the program may be in for a little boost next spring.

I agree with ya Bro.

Willard did you say Willard? Pm me and we’ll match up dance cards. You lookin for a weekday or weekend?

*We only get back that proportion that correlates to the number of licenses sold. * If Idaho sells licenses to 5,000 12 year olds, they get $60,000 that we could have had, but didn’t last year because we didn’t sell licenses to 12 year olds. You are suggesting that $5 will stop someone from fishing. That’s silly!

**Some people just don’t understand kids. I’ve been working with the criminal youth for over 30 years. $5 ain’t the point, the fun is being taken out of fishing. Younglings want to have and catch lots of fish. When Strawberry was a put-n-take fishery, fathers and grandfathers started kids on fishing. Then, came the parking fees. After that, the slot limit. This is an example that turned alot people off of fishing(I have neighbors that quit fishing all together cause of these). As much as I fish they could double the fees for adults and I wouldn’t care, but you know others would have serious problems with a five dollar increase.

Boy do I understand that TG. I wouldn’t want this issue to stop or prevent any kid from fishing. No matter what the reason. And that makes a very good point.

Lots of there over here and all different. Ya gotta love this place. [;)]

I have a bit of a different situation, my 12 year old daughter hates and I mean HATES (gulp) to fish… last year at our cabin at Bear lake after about two hours of begging, pleading and bribing I finally got her to agree to go out. It was a 55 degree late October day, the water was reflective glass- she boated a 9 pound mac, hooked and brought in all on her own. It was a perfect day and a perfect situation, and it created a memory that neither of us will ever forget. Now, being that I can never get her in my boat to fish I would have not even considered getting an additional license for her… that memory would have only been a wish for me, and that would have been sad. Its not about the stupid five bucks, its about a kid just grabbing a rod and fishing- thats just my opinion.
by the way I have some great pics of that trip I could post if I could figure out how to downsize them to the appropriate size.
