Exactly!

Why? Because they can afford a $40 lift ticket every time they go skiing, but can’t afford a $5 license for a whole year? Or should I say their parents can’t.
Fishrmn
How many 12 year olds do ya have Flycasting?
This isn’t a fee for the kids. It’s a fee for their parents. For those who are on an already tight budget it will mean NO fishing for them. That will really promote the sport.
I would have gladly paid a couple of extra bucks for mine. I’m willing to bet there isn’t many anglers who would have objected to an increase if they knew it was going to keep it free for the younger kids. All my kids are grown now, but I have grandkids and I can see the writing on the wall.
What erks me and should erk everyone of YOU. Is the fact that this state has more money than it knows what to do with. We are over taxed by billions and are getting nothing for it but higher fees. Something wrong with that picture.
Ahh hell let me jump off this soap box and give some one else a chance.
“How many 12 year olds do ya have Flycasting?”
None, yet. But I would be willing to pay a full price fishing license for them at that age… since I did when I was 12.
I just don’t buy the $5 a year fee breaking the budget.
How much does it cost to go to one movie? How much does it cost to buy a video game? How much does a skateboard and/or helmet cost? Hell, how much does it cost to go to McDonalds???
I’m not positive about where the $200,000+ will be allocated, but I would be willing to bet that some of it is going to go into youth fishing programs. I volunteered for the Urban Fisheries Program this year and we had almost 50 kids just at our location (which was extremely small), each of which paid $15 (I believe) for the 6 week class. I know that each of those kids or their parents will gladly pay the $5 fee.
I agree that more state and federal money should be put into the DWR’s hands. Won’t argue that point at all.
It Doesn’t make any sense that some of your guys say that you would gladly pay extra on your License, as long as the kids stay free, just use the extra that you would gladly pay and buy your kid a license, five dollars is lot cheaper than most thing that kids that age want to do. Plus the DWR gets $12 in matching funds for every five dollars to go back to hatcheries, community fisheries and Youth fishing programs. I just don’t understand why anybody would be opposed to that.

your right Tommy!! my 2 boy’s 12 and 14 said this year if they had to have a license then they did not want to fish..
14 is the age to buy a license anyway, right?
IMO, if someone stops fishing just for the fact that they have to purchase a license, then I could care less if they did fish. As my kids grow up, I hope they learn to love fishing as much or more than I do. When the day comes that they have to purchase a license I think they gladly will. I will have already explained to them what their license fees fund, and how it makes for better fishing experiences for us. If they don’t want one at that point, they must not like fishing.
Heck, I still remember getting my 1st license. I was excited about it! I picked up popcans for a week off the Ogden River to help my mom pay for it. Remember, it’s probably the 1st license any of us ever had. How grown up is that? ![]()
Now if it is because they cannot afford a license, that’s different. But I already voiced my opinion on the validity of the cost ($5) argument.
The way I read it on the DWR site is that the $5 license is a 365 day license just like a normal one. Those 13 year olds that purchase a $5 license could get a heck of deal if they didn’t purchase until 2 weeks before their 14th b-day.
(at least that’s the way i read it)
dude like i said they said they did not want to fish if they had to have a license.. now as for why i have no idea why my kidd’s do half the stuff they do.. and there is the old saying you can lead kidds to water but you can’t make them have fun with it.. ![]()
it’s not a matter of money i said i would get them one.. but they said that they did not need one.. so there ya have it..
but tommy will have to get one next year and he is looking forword to getting his.. he has hard core fisherman in him!! [sly]
I think you guys are missing the point. It’s not that they are willing to charge the kids. In most cases it wont be the kids buying the license it will be their parents.
I myself would have no problem paying the 5 bucks. But I know that is not true for a whole lot of families out there. You who are living in Glass Towers need a reality check.
( Don’t take this personal flycasting it is not directed at you.)
Utah has the lowest aid to the poor than any state in the nation. Period! The worst health care for the needy. Next to NO dental care and the list goes on and on. Yet we are taxed at one of the highest rates in the nation. We get little for the money.
We have billions in surplus. Are they giving it back? NO!! I say then it should go to help those who need it.
If they need more money at the DWR raid the surplus funds. Billions to go around.
I am not opposed to being asked to donate 5,10, 15, or what ever I wish so that kids can get a chance to fish. I mean how hard would it be to add it to the cost of a license when you buy one?
Add the donation to the cost of my license when a kid wants to get one the money is there for him/her. All they would need to do is SAY that they didn’t have the funds. No need to embaress them over it.
I can tell ya I know more than 1 12 yr old who wont fish because of this. And I think it is just criminal. My 2 cents on the greedy govt.
Its not the five dolllars on your license that gets the fed funds. Its the “# OF LICENSE’s” not the amount of license money collected. So 5 bucks from daddy dont add up to 5 bucks plus fed funds for another license. And when i was a kid I bought a license a twelve. So if your not going to take your kid fishing for a whole year because of 5 dollars than i guess they have no video games, tv, radio, baseballs etc because all them hobbies cost more than 5 dollars. Man lighten up the state tried to let the kiddies some slack a few years back but they realized how much they were losing in fed funds. So they made they license only five dollars. HAVE YOUR KID COME TO MY HOUSE AND ILL GIVE HIM TEN BUCKS FOR MOWING MY LAWN. But if he islike most of the kids in my neighborhood he wont leave the airconditioned house and video games to go outsie and mow a lawn.

Adding a couple of bucks to your license isn’t the point. WE ARE already paying the Dingle-Johnson taxes. But if our license sales numbers are lower than other states, they get the money that WE paid. If other states sell licenses to 12 and 13 year olds (Utah did until about 6 or 7 years ago) and we don’t, they get OUR money. Again, at least they are making it a $5 license until the kids are 14. And if $5 breaks the budget for the year, they’ve got more problems than the high price of fishin’ skateboardin’, skiin’, video games, internet, high gas prices, fast food, and milk combined.

Nothing personal taken. ![]()
But really, I know what point you are making. But there are so many ways for a 12 year old to make $5 in less than an hour.
If a kid truly likes and wants to fish, but is unwilling to make $5 on his/her own, then there are far more serious problems with that kid than just fishing.
(This is not directed towards Fuzzy nor anyone else’s kids specifically)
im thinking with the way this state operates, in five years that 12 and 13 year old license will be bumped up to 10 or 15 bucks. and then where does it go from there
10 years or less ago it was $24 for 12 year olds.
[reply][reply]your right Tommy!! my 2 boy’s 12 and 14 said this year if they had to have a license then they did not want to fish..[/reply]
Really?? They said they’d rather quit fishin’ instead of helpin’ ta pay for all the fun they’ve had? I guess that means they’ve caught their last fish. Because as of July 1st, they’re both required to have a license to fish in Utah. And they’ll have to have one every year from now on.

Which is still less than the price of five gallons of gas. Where can you go for a year on five gallons of gas? You guys are making mountains out of molehills.
Fishrmn
Hey BFR you missed the point to. But thanks for the offer my kid is nearly 20 and pays his own way now. And yes I bought him many a licenses over the years. You didn’t get the part about donating the 5 dollars so the kids CAN GET THEIR OWN license. Then the state (cheap buggers that they are) will get the license count that they want.
I agree that are many ways to earn 5 bucks. Lord knows I did my share when I was younger.
Lets say you are 12 have several brothers and sisters. You are in a single family home and the parent works 6/7 days a week just to pay the rent and put food on the table. Now you are the oldest so when mom/dad is away working you have to take care of your siblings.
Do you, can you, yake the time to mow a lawn?
Wash someones car? Maybe babysit?
I would rather leave 5 bucks with DWR and when this kid got a chance to come in, his license is paid for. Now the DWR gets their extra money and the kid gets to fish. I’ll bet he/she is borrowing the gear from the DWR/Parks and Rec to go.
I just think it is criminal that WE as a society puts money before our own. Big business and Big Government 1st. Yeehawww the American way… screw the little guy.
For some the extra 5 bucks may just break the bank.
So you can figure this out let me see if I can explain it better. If every angler that holds a Utah fishing license paid an extra 2 bucks they would have a surplus of funds. Then they could easily place that money in an account so when the 12/13 year olds came to get their license (see they are getting a license for the fed. dollar count) they could then issue them a license.
If you think we have no need for this go to Jordanelle, Deer Creek, UL State Park or any other that offers the following program. The loan of free fishing gear. Ask them how often they loan gear out and to who it is loaned. You will find it goes mostly to the kids.
I will say this again. The State is as greedy as the Big oil companies. And you comment it is “our” money. What’s up with that? I didn’t give any of my money to the feds to fish and hunt in Utah. I did however pay it to Utah and would like to have a say as to how it is used. Nor have i paid any taxes (that I know of) to directly support any of these programs to the fereral govt.
You are right however when you say they could not afford skateboards, fast food, video games, and a whole lot of other things. Maybe I’m just a bleeding heart liberal. I’m not rich by any means but I have enough. And if I want something I usually go and get it. There are others that do not have that luxuary. Those of us who do take it for grantit that everyone does. I truly hope you are NEVER in need. You may find out the hard way there is nothing there for you.
