I got there about 0800…Fished about 100 yards out from the ramp…Ice was 5 inches thick…I ended up catching 16 rainbows…Most were around 13 inches one was just over 17…It was a good time.
Is anybody heading anywhere tomorrow? Want to share a ride? I live in Roy. Let me know.
I was there too. Got there about the same time. I fished off the South dike where the city usually is. Caught plenty of perch and gills. Only caught 3 trout, which I prefer not to catch out of there. Saw a guy go thru the ice. 3 inches where I was. I will be back in the morning, but I am coming from Logan.
Went out there this morning as well. Parked on south dyke. I got lots of perch but only about a half a dozen good sized ones ones. One big gill. I was looking for the larger gills and perch but lots of dinks. Where are the schools of big boys? Half dozen little rainbows. Four little largemouth. My buddy got about a pound or so largemouth. Everyone I was with caught rainbows but not the quality we were used to seeing. Best one between the three of us was 16’’ but slender. Over all, a fun day. Slush monster was out big time though! Pretty much standing in 4’’ of water by the time we left at 1:45. What effect is this going to have on the ice?
Why, you ask? I love bluegill. I usually fish Mantua for a couple or three weeks right at the beginning of ice season. Then after that, I stay closer to home and hit Hyrum and Newton, with an occasional trip to East Canyon, Pineview, or somewhere else I don’t get to fish.
Ben are the perch better sized at Mantua than the Newt? I’m hoping to sneak out for a couple hours in the morning but was thinking newton with less crowds, shorter drive and thicker ice. Hoping the cold night will tighten up the slush a bit. Should I drive a little further and catch something big enough to be worth cleaning? Do you know why the guy went through? Spring, inlet area or just generally not thick enough? Later J
I have caught good-sized perch both places. As far as the guy who went thru - when he got out, he was standing right next to the hole he fell in. I walked over there after they left to mark the spot with the gps on my phone. I was 3 feet from it. My guess is just a weak spot. He was drilling a hole or had just finished drilling a hole. I couldn’t guarantee you bigger fish at either place, but you could probably find bigger-on-average gills at Mantua. Your perch, most likely, would be around the same if I had to guess. If you’re at Mantua in the morning, maybe I’ll see you there.
I hit Mantua yesterday (Thursday). 3 inches of good ice and about 5 inches of slush. A guy on a Rukon trail bike just about drove into a spring 100 yards off shore. He called it quits and left- must have scared him pretty good. My buddy and I caught 12 rainbows between us. He pulled in a 17.5 inch rainbow. We also caught 12 perch- 2 of them 8 inches. No bluegills. We accessed from the south side and walked half way out and fished over weed free area.
Yeah, I was using them. No one that I know of her in Cache Valley has them. The only place that did is fresh out til Wednesday. Good luck tomorrow. I’ll be out north of the south dike. If I can remember my BFT flag, I’ll stick it up.
