Little Bear heating up

Hit the little bear last night for about 5 min. literally, ended up landing two browns, one 18 and another 16. Both got “fish milk” on me as my daughter calls it. They are defenitly on the reds. Hoping to hit it tomarrow and find the big dogs.

I’m surprised there is any water this time of year. Then again, this has been a crazy water year.
Are you spin fishing? Long stick? Can’t wait to see some pics from your next trip!
I LOVE that little river! Gstott should chime in soon [;)]

thanks going to be in your neck of the woods some time this week may as well stop by the LB

Throwing shallow cranks. No monsters yet but hopefully I can get into them Tomorrow. It’s a small river but it can yield some big browns. It’s crazy there, the fish will take bugs on top but normally you don’t see it. I think the forage is a lot different than other rivers or sections of it. Mostly non terrestrial bugs and smaller fish is what they feed on. Plus the trees and the dark bottom make it tough even on a sunny day to find the reds. I basically fish the runs that I wouldn’t in spring or summer seems to be where they hang.

I’ll warn the townsfolk seeins how we don’t like strangers in these parts.

harhar remember, i used to live up that way years and years ago

Well, since you brought it up…Sounds like I should check it out. I’ve been fishing The Blacksmith (I can’t believe how high the water still is, it seems more like late May/early June) and other small streams in the area. I’ll probably post something about it in the fly fishing section soon.

So were you on the little stretch below Porcupine, or do you know someone further down? It doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of access on that stream.

On a side note, the whities on The Blacksmith are milking it up pretty hardcore right now too

That’s kinda what I was wondering. I’ve heard there are some public access points, but don’t really know where they are (nor care to have them advertised - if anyone wants to send a PM).
I’ve heard of nice fish in the LBear both above and below Hyrum. Was thinking of taking a run UP the inlet from the lake. With the water still so high - I’d expect access is pretty good.

I tried my hand at making Roe Sacks for a first time, and am itching to float them down a river, especially if spawn action is in gear!

So did you go up left hand fork, or just along the Blacksmith? I’ve hit the dam above the park, and a couple spots along the river (picnic benches). Need to give it another try. Even with the high water.

At least all this damned rain, soon to be snow - waited for the weekend to hit. Grrr!
Had a nice layer of ice on my pond too - probably gonna melt down again.

So you defected, even worse! :sunglasses:

Family has ground in Wellsville. If you can get in the river you shouldn’t have any trouble. I fish it from mendon to Hyrum. Seems to be better than above the dam.

Cool, thanks for the info. Sounds like I’ll have to go on an exploratory trip. I usually fly fish for trout, but I’m kind of having an urge to throw some small bass lures in some of those log jams down there.

Yeah, don’t waste your time in the picnic areas. They don’t have that great of water for the most part. I fished a creek I don’t want to talk about publicly because it’s small, and I fished the main Blacksmith a few miles above the dam. I hadn’t been up there since March and I couldn’t believe how high the water still is. It was pretty good fishing. I caught 13 browns, 7 whitefish and 2 cutts in about 2.5 hours. I even found a pod of fish feeding on midges and got some dry fly action. Just above them in a shallow riffle there was a pod of whities and got to watch them taking my nymphs. Too bad I had to leave for work, it was just getting good [frown]
