Went too Powell from the 24 of April to the 1 of May. Beautiful weather , fishing was great. All species were caught and most just average size, except a few large Smallmouth which dominated catches. Stripped Bass were deep and all other Bass were shallow. Most canyons produced well. We covered almost 300 miles and gas was expensive at the Marinas. All in all a great time, can’t wait to go in the Fall when the Stripped Bass will be boiling.Water temps Avg 59% too 60% in the backs of canyons.Caught lots of fish too many too keep track of. Some canyons you would hook up and start again and most times hook up again instantly. Trolled and threw grubs in the shallows most of the time.
Looks like a great time was had by all. It definitely looks like you picked the right week to go. With how expensive gas is locally I can only imagine how expensive it is at the marinas down there these days.
$5.06 a gallon. Weather was gorgeous no wind to speak of.
glad it was nice for nancy and you. great smallie she caught.[;)]
holy carp! i thought i had it bad in germany! we leave sunday for powell. cant wait, its been 12 years since i had been there with Trout_Slayer and the old man. hope the fishing is as good for us as it was for you!
Where on the lake did you go? Launch out of Bullfrog or Wahweap? Looks like you had fun, like kochanut said we leave Sunday for a weeks fun on the lake too!!! Will post when we get back!!!
TS
Bullfrog, we went south first down o marker 30 and fished all canyons on the east side then the west.mornigs were better on the west and east as the day progressed. Backs of canyons with rock slide were best. Fire tiger and perch for colors
Alright! You have started this year’s fishing at Powell. ![]()
With rising water levels from the descent snowpack, there will be alot more structure and weeds to fish around. The fish must be getting as anxious as we all are.
Nice Smallmouth Bass! I would love to catch one that big!
Not as much brush as you would think, water is not rising that fast as of yet.
I read on Wayne’s words that it is rising at a rate of 2-6 inches per day on the warmer days. Is that pretty close to what you saw?
Did they like the lures trolled slow, medium, or fast?
Thanks.
Nice goin’ guys. Looks like you found a few. Those smallies are bodacious.
How did the new boat perform? Got any modifications in mind?
Fast about 2 to 3 miles . Slow rise, has not cut loose yet. The water was muddy in spots, back of canyons clear water. San Juan muddy and Escalante muddy.
mactuna,
Those are really nice pictures. It was especially nice to see that Smallmouth photographed against the ruler. So often people hold a fish out at arms length to make them appear larger than they are, sometimes a small fish appears bigger than the person holding them.
Thanks, yes if you hold it out it looks bigger. When we catch 200+ lb tunas no holding it up just the fish too show size
Great, want electric trolling motor. The 15 hp gas is nice but not stealth enough.
I was just curious if you could access at Farleys Canyon? Also wondering if hitte(not sure on spelling) is open or if i just have to access through bullfrog?
Don’t know, heard there were alot of obstacles up north, We only went too mile marker 115.Put that question on Waynes Words and some of them might know.
