Ice is coming, and I got shelter questions

OK so I was at Cabellas last weekend looking at/for ice shelters. They had a Quickfish 6! Holy smokes! Its HUGE! I can’t imagine something that big. What are your thoughts about this beast?

I’m open to any shelter to look at, but there are bucket loads of 'em. Tell me what is the best shelter and why. Tell me what shelter not to get and why. And if you got a picture or a link to a picture that would be helpful.

I love my quick fish 3 from sportsmans. Plenty of room to fish three people, can stand in the shelter for the most part, does well in wind, light to carry, and no floor (which I prefer so i can dig as many holes wherever I so choose. the best part - they are cheaper than the others, usually aroun 160-180.

Thats nothing. On scofield every year New years day there is a group that sets up a massive tent. They could fit 40-50 people in it easy… Grills, generator for tv / stereo, heaters etc, its a crazy setup. Probably a family reunion type deal.

But yea the Quickflip 6 is big. I think they are popular more back east where they fish big groups of people for perch.

I looked over alot of them before I settled on Eskimo and after owning one for a few years, I’m glad I did. They are extremely well built and work fantastic.

I bought the QuickFlip2 and fished myself, my wife and boy in it all at once. But now that my boy’s getting bigger I wish I had got the QuickFlip3.

I have a Shappel s2000. It fits 2 people comfortable and 3 crammed in. It has a hard plastic floor with outdoor carpet on the bottom with two holes that can close. It folds in half and works as a sled for easy transport. It goes up quick–two people can put it up in about a minute. It’s worked well for me and is probably a fairly cheap, entry level tent.

Here’s a link to the newer model on bass pro shops:

Most shelters from several years back all had floors built into them.
They are nice when set up but many of them are heavy and hard to pull out onto the ice.
The Quickfish3 and other shelters without floors are now the most popular and best priced shelters.

The one thing that I don’t like about the quickfish is having to anchor it to the ice.
It makes it a bit harder to move than a shelter with a floor.

The upside to a QF3 is that it fits on a sled with your geat and is easy to get out on the ice.
The QF6 looks very hard to set up.
I wouldn’t want to move it around on the ice very often.
Get 2 QF3’s instead.

Cabelas has the Quickfish 6 but their own version of the Quickfish 3. Only problem is the Cabelas version of the 3 is only the size of the Quickfish 2 but with a taller roof. Go with the Quickfish 3 and get the extra 10 inches inside for the same price.

Sportsmans in Provo had a few of the green Quickfish 2 for $129 first of the week.

I have the quick flip 3 and love it

i have 2 . 1 is the first style fabril 2 man. about 14 yrs old now. then i have a huge 4 man eskimo. it is very hevy and very hard to drag on snow. not bad on ice. i like a floor its keeps feet and gear dry and dont have to be secured to ice. [fishin]

OK DKS, I like your suggestion about getting 2 of the quickfish3. GOOD IDEA! If they connected then there would be something to consider. The guy at Cabellas said that the 6 was easy to set up (less than 2 minutes).

Thank you all for your thoughts. I’m still in a bit tentative, but I think I’m still leaning to the quickfish 6 only for those times that I’ve got my kids with me, of the times that I’ve got my kids and my brother and his kids, or the time that I’ve got my kids and the neighbors kids…:astonished:.

I’ll post once I’ve used it and let you know what I think. Again thank you folks!

I think some people here (not all) are confusing the Eskimo quickFISH and quickFLIP shacks.

If you think the qf6 is too big then you are wrong. I have one and I also thought it was massive. But after owning one for a month I purchased another one. Yeah thats right I own 2 QF6. And I love um both. One for fishing and the other for the drunk tank. Get the QF6 you can never have enough room Ice fishing!!!
