Huntington/Gunnison Reservoir 2-27-10

Four of us (including two youngsters) tried Huntington Reservoir and Gunnison Reservoir yesterday. I put the extension on my auger and at Huntington I was glad to have it. There is about a foot of snow on top of about 8 -12 inches of slush and then 36+ inches of various layers of ice. Fortunately, someone had made one pass across the reservoir (near the dam) on a snowmobile so we were able to walk on the snowmobile path and not fall through to the slush all of the time (but often enough to make it a little miserable). We managed to land 5 tiger trout in about 2 1/2 hours of fishing. Saw lots of fish on the finder that would not bite and missed or lost many other bites. Got checked by a game warden. He thought that he saw me reel up a third rod (after seeing him on the hill) and I had to explain to him that I never fish with an extra rod and that I didn’t even see him until he was down checking the license of my fellow angler. We were the only ones fishing Huntington and it appeared only a handful of anglers had fished it recently.

Packed up around 11:00 AM to try our luck at Gunnison Reservoir. Bought some ice cream sundaes in Fairview as we passed through to warm us up. Never fished it before but thought that it would be fun for the kids to land a bunch of carp. Would have never found the place had I not gotten directions from the fuzzy one and then we couldn’t figure out how to access the reservoir for at least another 45 minutes or so. Perhaps the conditions had changed (water was stained) since Ron fished there or we are lousy anglers or both. We only caught two carp and only missed two or three other bites.

you could not figure out how to get on the lake?

lol where did you go? were you by the dam? it’s only about a 20 foot walk from the top of the dam to the ice..[sly]

last qustion how deep were you fishing?

We first went to the east side of the dam; however, there was a muddy creek entering the reservoir there and the edges were really soft. I then tried to find an access point up lake and found none. Finally, we came back to where we started and found a road that took us to the west side of the dam. We fished in water from about 9 to maybe 25’ feet deep. I even drilled out a prior hole (perhaps one of yours). Water closer to the dam was as green as split-pea soup.

PS – you weren’t kidding about that road being muddy!

lol well sounds like you were in the right place.. the water level must be comeing up.. and it’s been warm here for the last week or so.. the 3 times i have tryed it this year the water has been pea green.. most the time it’s that color all the time..
got ya some of that gunnison red clay all over your truck huh?

well all i can say is maybe ya needed some fathead minnows.. thats what i have been useing. the lake it full of them.. and carp of corse.. i did get 2 or 3 sunfish out of my minnow traps there last sunner as well..

It was a lot of fun even though the fishing was slower than I wanted but that seems to be the theme of my fishing experiences in the last month or so! Still nice to see those tiger trout and my son has been talking about the trip all day today. The trip did get me excited to try Huntington again once the ice is gone. I’ll have to get out there on my float tube or my raft.

I have attached a picture of the tiger trout Kent hooked and then let my son reel in. He was also excited to catch the carp (doesn’t take much to excite a nine year old!)

By the way, the deer herds we saw along the ride were awesome!
