I guaranteed that I would find some fishable ice today and fish it, and not fall through, and I did but barely.
We left Provo at 5:40 a.m. and pulled up to Huntington at 7 am or so. The lake looked capped and I was hopeful. We loaded up the sled and headed out. I started hitting the ice with my axe and noticed that I was breaking through on the first hit. ![]()
The ice wasnāt cracking at all so we decided to walk along the thicker ice along the dam which extended out about 15 feet from shore. Half way across the dam we walked out towards the lake and again kept breaking through on the first hit. But the ice seemed solid so we made some holes and measured the ice at right at 2.5 inches. We quickly caught some bites and landed some nice 15-16 inch tigers. Tons of bites for the day and I would say we only hooked 10-20% of the bites we got. We caught them on small green jigs and ratfinkes with meal worms.

I am proud that my buddy and I were the first to ice fish Huntington this year. Fuzzy joined us at about 8:30 and another two guys came right before him.
Thanks again Fuzz for the daily updates!! It was fun fishing with you again!
The weather was unusually warm and the ice began to crack loudly and often. The ice began to sink and the water began coming through our holes. It felt like we were in the lake with about an inch of water around each hole. The sun came up and the weather kept getting warmer and warmer. Fuzz and the other two took off due to a fear of cold water and we left about a half hour after them. I bet that the ice was too weak to fish on by noon or so. I canāt believe how warm it got out there!!
The fishing had died anyways as soon as the lake started popping and creaking. I wonder if those noises scared the fish??
So we decided to go see how Cleveland was looking. We found Fuzzy fishing in one corner of the lake with about 4 inches of good ice. The fishing sucked though with only two bites and one 16.5 inch rainbow to show for it.

On the way home, we decided to do a Scofield drive by. There might be some safe ice on some part of the lake but there was still some open water and the ice looked really soft and thin. I would give it a few more days before the majority of the lake will have safe ice. Sorry, I forgot to take pictures, but the dam arm had lots of open water which people were fishing, which makes me believe that all the ice was really thin, as the dm arm has frozen first over the last 3-4 years.
It was great to be ice fishing today but I canāt wait until I can hit these lakes again without a fear of falling through. At least I am winning the ice fishing tournaments i have entered!![:p]
