Hey, all! I’m an avid bass fisherman who lives just a few miles below the northern border of our fine state. As a result, I never torture myself with thinking about fishing that warmer water down at the southern end.
Due to crazy circumstances and an opportunity to spend a few hours with a brother who’s been stationed overseas for a couple years, I have the chance to run down to St. George for a day or two and catch up and wet a couple lines together.
**So here’s my request: **
I know that many a fisherman is tight-lipped about his secrets and successful efforts. I respect that and can’t argue the position, as I have some of my own tricks on local lakes here that I’m reticent to share publicly.
This is, however, almost certainly the only trip I’ll ever manage down there (i.e. I will not become your competition)… and I’d sure like it to be productive for both of us.
If you don’t want to reveal your trade secrets for all to see, a private message would be wonderful. If you do want to share publicly, bless your generous heart.
Finally, I understand prespawn patterns. I already am aware that I will likely have to crawl jigs and plastics, dropshot, slow roll spinnerbaits, and maybe even try a sloooow deep diving crank…
I’m more looking for information regarding sections of the lake to consider (I have no electronics on my little boat, so I’m blind beyond whatever depth visibility is at), unique approaches that I might not be aware of, if there are colors outside of the traditionals that appeal to them southern hawgs, etc… - Those types of things.

Well the fishing has been slow at sand hollow i was there today andonlycaught 8 fish in deep water about 25 to 35 feet using dropshot
The only time I’ve fished sand hollow was a few years ago in April for a youth tournament. It’s a really fun lake I don’t know what the depth looks like now, I think someone mentioned it was down a bit and wasn’t nearly as much cover. But regardless just go down and have a good time with your brother!
I’ll be down there this weekend myself, maybe from Saturday afternoon until Monday morning. I’ve never seen this lake before, so I’m no help. You might want to read Don Allphin’s column that was in last Friday’s edition of the Daily Herald, you can find it online. They did fairly well in mid-February. I’ll be in a black Tracker boat, just me and my dog. Make sure you say hi if you see us.
I recommend staying deep as others have suggested but it’ll be tough without electronics. I would head straight across from the main boat ramp to the pumphouse and keep your boat off the bank about 25 yards. The water may be clear enough to see the slope and you can guess from there.
The long dam, south west area has all kinds of dips and hollows so you can experiment there. On the south end use the No Wake buoys as your indicator.
The rocks and boulders that line the no wake zone near the ramp is a good place too.
As far as baits stick with naturals…green pumpkin, watermelon, blue/black. If I were going I would throw 1/2 oz black spinnerbaits deep.
Drop shot around the boulders with natural and while finesse worms. One of my favoriate is a road kill snallie beaver either Texas rigged or on a shakey head
