Does anybody know of anywhere one can catch grayling within a reasonable drive from Provo? I know a lot of lakes require considerable hiking to get to, but I was looking at information on Silver Lake. It looks like it has been stocked with grayling. Does anyone know how it fishes and when the roads to it might be open? Thanks all. Love the info on this site. You’re all fishing gods in my eyes.
I don’t know when you will be able to access Silver Lake but I expect it will be several weeks yet. I have been up there a couple of times looking for those grayling and have failed to find any and I have not heard any reports of anyone else finding them. I think they all ended up as brookie food.
the canyon opens this week but i dont no anything about graylings or how and where to catch them sorry and if you go any where post the report!!!
There are several lakes in the uintahs that still have decent populations of grayling. I doubt they are accessible yet. There is some hiking required but about 2 miles on an easy forest service trail. Grayling are usually small but a beautiful fish. I am most familiar with the Provo River drainage and can tell you of at least 2 lakes in the 2 mile range if you are inteested shoot me a PM.
Define reasonable. Trial lake requires no hiking and I have had a lot of success for grayling there. They are all smaller though. so if you want anything with size I would recomend ,when it warms up, hiking back into Marjorie. It is a bit of a hike but you can fish multiple lakes along the way.

this is a touch off topic, but is 150 up to trial lake opne yet? ts been well over 15 years since i have been up there and was thinking of taking a drive and taking some pictures

Silver Lake up American Fork Canyon has had Grayling stocked in it in Aug. 2009, and July 2008.
Trial Lake on the Mirror Lake Highway also has them, and you can drive right to that one. Typically the highway is opened up on or about Memorial Day weekend. Trial lake was last stocked with Grayling in Aug. 2008.
Smith-Morehouse Res. also received stockings of grayling in 2009.
You can find also browse the fish stocking reports yourself to find other places where they have been stocked.
Round lake, its a hike 2 miles from the end of Smith Morehouse road, and the next lake above that. You can see them resting close to the shore. Neat to see but ain’t got no fight.
I called the Kamas Ranger Station on Monday. They are working on opening the Mirror Lake Highway, but it was not open to Trial Lake then. She said they were just about to the Provo Falls. I would almost think maybe to Trial by Saturday. I can’t imagine it will be more than two weeks for the road to be open over the top. Memorial Day is Monday!!
I hiked to Silver Lake last year in search of grayling but didn’t see any grayling…but the lake holds very nice Brookies. I know the DWR stocked it a few years ago but the fish were very small and probably ended up in the Brookies’ bellies…same may be for Smith and Morehouse. The state has stocked thousands of fingerlings but I haven’t met anyone who has had much of any success for grayling in S&M.
With that said, I have NEVER been dissapointed at Round Lake 3 miles above S&M…but it won’t be accessible until AT LEAST June 20-25.
I have fished a majority of the lakes on Mirror Lake Highway including hiking a long long way back into the lakes that are way off the beaten path. I have fished Silver Lake a lot. I have had my best luck for grayling on Silver Lake, up next to the shore line about this time of year. If you wait to long then they move out to deeper water as the weather gets warmer. I have also caught a few up at Trial Lake but not nearly as many as at Silver. Try a mini booger (darker colors). They do fight but not like a normal fish. There are other lakes in the Unitas that have bigger grayling but you have to put in quite a bit of hiking and harder fishing to get them.
Bottom line, go to Silver when the road opens.
By the way drove up the Mirror Lake highway today, you can only get about to the falls, not quite. Doesn’t look like they are working very hard on getting it open either.
On Saturday I drove to Pass Lake, just beyond the Mirror Lake turn. The state machinery was in the road there - the Wyoming side was not open - but I saw Lost, Lilly, Mirror and Pass - all were still iced, but not for long.
Are we talking about the same lake here. Silver lake up american fork canyon? I have been there about 4 times. I have had two 100 fish days there for very small brookies. I havent ever seen a grayling come out of there and I have looked a lot. Did you take any pics of these fish? Not doubting you, just really curious if you are really getting them there.
Brookie reports the road is open to a couple lakes that have grayling. Now you just have to wait for open water. Lost is usual has some a few days prior to Trial Lake. Last year grayling where pretty easy to catch there. Just fish any technique that’ll catch trout and you should get into a few. Be warned that in Utah grayling stay quite small.
There is Silver Lake Flats reservoir, which you can drive to, and then there’s Silver Lake, which is about a 2 mile hike on decent but sometimes steep trail up from Silver Lake Flats.
I didn’t think Silver Lake Flats had grayling, pretty sure that Silver Lake does however.
I know that. Like I said, I have been up there and caught 100 brookies. You dont do that at SLF.
