Hung out in the Uintas the last four days, and trout fishing was marginal so we decided to hike in for some Grayling action. Lake we went to can be accessed via the Crystal Lake Trail Head. Wife spanked me using a fly and bubble as I stuck to my Fly Rod Guns. Midges and small flies worked best as is typical with the Grayling diet. Midday hours were fine, and fish were located more towards the center of the lake. Float tubes would have been perfect, but not present this trip. Numerous lakes in the Uintas should be good now, but most require some hiking to get to so if you haven’t had the Grayling experience, now’s a good time to do it.
Nice report!
Grayling are in Trial. Granted I was in a tube but they were caught about 25’ off shore.
Oh, and a floating line with a PMX fly.
I know exactly which lake that is. I hiked there earlier this summer and didn’t even get a bite. Are there brookies in there too or just grayling?
I caught a grayling out of Trial 2 weeks ago from shore. Very small indeed but it was a nice surprise, nonetheless.
Those grayling pics are nice. I didn’t have much luck at that lake either when I was there in June but I blamed it on the spawn. The grayling were thick in the river.
I’ve never caught any trout in that lake, but it doesn’t mean they are not there. I use midges size 18 and smaller most of the time, but I have occasionally tossed the old trusty Jakes testing the waters for what else might lurk within. A few superb trout lakes are a couple easy miles away from this one so I’ve always walked the extra distance when targeting them.
I am just a curious type of guy, wondering which lake you were at? And if you don’t want to tell I understand. Maybe more of a guessing game for me. There are only two lakes that hold grayling that one would access from the Crystal Lake Trailhead, (eliminating Trial) and they are both reservoirs with extreme draw down, One starts with a M and the other a W. I am guessing the W. Just for fun. How long where the fish? Haven’t caught grayling in years.
Grayling ranged between 11" and 13" as a guess, but we didn’t actually measure. Lake is the “M” lake. We went back yesterday, and had limited success the short time were were there. We were actually on a trip to catch some fall Brookies to admire their fall colors so we moved along pretty fast to get to out destination. Once there, we did pretty well, but many / most of my hookups were self re leasers near the shore or while trying to snag me up in the logs, weeds, etc.
Attached a photo of one that actually made it to the net. It was about 14 miles of hiking in one day, but well worth it, and the weather was great!
hope you made it to fire and hidden. I am guessing you know that area quite well, we could share insights by email or pm. I am always interested in how each lake is producing as it changes from year to year, some more consistent than others. Nice color on that brookie, thanks for the picture.
