There was a glitch either in my editing software or on the YouTube side.  My guess is that the problem was on my end.  At any rate, I redid it and posted the new version…and changed the link.

Thankee sir. I quit buying the (expensive) foam cylinders a long time ago. I now buy 1" or 1.5" foam kneeling pads and cut plugs from them with a power drill and punches I make from pieces of rod blank or metal tubing. See attached picture. This allows me to get exactly the length and diameter I want for the batch I’m working on…at only a couple of cents apiece. That will all be illustrated and detailed in my upcoming video on Flig Making.

I knew that you would come up with an alternative to the rods. Most excellent. I want to start making some popping bugs for bluegills and green sunfish and the cost of those rods is scary. I’ll give the pads a try !! Do you apply an abrasive to the ends of the rods to cut or just use pressure and the drill ???

The first plugs I cut…many long years ago…I just pushed and twisted until the punch worked through the foam. Now I put the tube in a drill and run it over a whetstone or fine file until it is pretty sharp. Then it cuts down through the foam like hot butter with the drill…and the sides come out super smooth. By the way, those little foam goodies make some great poppers. And you can modify the shape to make hoppers, crickets or beetles too. And with a needle and some rubber filament you can add some wiggly legs.

Hold on a bit if you can. I am collecting pics from the past and making a whole bunch of new ones for an instructional video on Flig Making. But here are a couple of pics to “pic” your interest.

When you come, plan to bring some of the hooks you will be using.  Or, I gots plenty of every stuff.

Very simple to make the plugs for the poppers.  You just cut the one end off at a slight angle and then use a Dremel tool to make a small depression.

We could all stand to be more “enlightened”.  But I have dropped a bit of weight this year.

If you gotta “get fligged”, I know the guy who makes them.  He works cheap…and is worth it.  Will be glad to meet at a Covid neutral spot…or you would be welcome to visit my tackletorium.  I’ve had two shots and a booster.  (non-alcoholic)

I should have my video treatise on “Making Your Own” finished soon.  After that I will be making one on “Sizes, Shapes & Colors”…with species-specific recommendations.  After that will be “Baits and Rigging”.  Gotta have something to keep me off the streets and out of trouble during the coming cooler months.  As you know, I don’t do ice fishing anymore.

Not quite yet, water temps still low 80’s…so they are still out on the beaches and in the passes. Once the water cools they will be moving inshore to the dark flats and canals, at least the Snook and Reds…trout seem to stay out on the grass flats of the inter coastal….just waiting for the big schools of BIG Jacks to start patrolling, funnest fishing ever.
